BURLINGTON HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION Minutes of the Meeting, September 25, 1968, City Hall PRESENT were Mr. Savely, City Council liaison and the following members: Mrs. Hodges, Mrs. Henson, Mrs. McCormally, Mrs. James Schramm, Mr. & Mrs. McCandless and Mssrs. Nichols, Mclan, Peck, Sparrow, Newman, White. Mr. Savely read the Ordinance establishing the Commission and announced the first order of business to be election of officers. Officers Mr. Peck was nominated and elected unanimously for Chairman. Mr. White was nominated Vice-Chairman and elected unanimously. The Chairman will appoint a Secretary-Treasurer and report this to Mr. Savely. Meeting Schedule After discussion of alternatives, it was decided that the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. will be the regular meeting time. This will not include the fourth Tuesday of December. It was agreed that notices should be mailed before each meeting and Mrs. Henson offered to telephone reminders which was accepted with appreciation. Budget Mr. Peck asked for the budget allowed the Commission. Mr. Savely gave the following information regarding '68 and '69 budgets, the former, he pointed out, will not be held over or applicable to '69 expenses '68 Budget $100.00 Travel 200.00 Office Expenses 150.00 Other Expenses $450.00 Total '69 Budget $100.00 Travel 250.00 Other Expenses $350.00 Total Ordinance It was agreed that all members should have copies of the current Ordinance, that copies of the Model Ordinance for Iowa cities, produced by the Iowa Civil Rights Commission should be used as basis for updating the present Ordinance. Human Rights-UN Booth Mrs. McCormally, Mr. White and others pointed out that participation in the community's International Human Rights Year-UN Celebration by the Commission is an excellent opportunity for educating the community in line with objectives set forth in the Ordinance. It was agreed that the Commission would participate by sharing a booth with NAACP at the Memorial Auditorium November 20 (see enclosed description). Booths and other exhibits will be on public display from 7:00 p.m.; speaker and program begins at 8:00 p.m.
