Out periodically, edited by Sally and Roger, your notes and ideas are invited for the next issue…. IDEAS: …for the first time in history man is not only taking his future seriously but he also has adequate technology and power to shape and form the future. He is endeavoring to choose his future rather than simply living out some inevitable trend…the greatest problem which man faces in the years to some …. Is the question of how much change the human being can accept, absorb and assimilate, and the rate at which he can take it… can he leave the static ways and guidelines which have dominated all of his history and adopt the process ways, the continual changing-ness which must be his if he is to survive? (Carl Rogers, Interpersonal Relationships: USA 2000. Full text at 707 Melrose.) - the Toffler lecture, Thursday, January 27, should deal directly with this… - THE CHANGING FAMILY STRUCTURE WORKSHOP with Margaret Mead, Feb. 17-19 will probe changes forming life styles and structures of tomorrow…. ISSUES: a random selection…. --what will be the shape of higher ed. Tomorrow if the Newman report catches on?? (a laon copy of Newman is at Melrose…. OR, write supt. Of Documents, Government Printing Office, Washington D.C. for your own copy for 75¢) --is student government without a future? Why? Whay does it mean for student involvement in University power?....for role of newly enfranchised in body politics? --are the 70’s to be a return to non-involvement, quietism, introspection. Individualism, general passivity (shades of the 50s)??? If so, how can we hope to meet the stride for change, a la Toffler and Carl Rogers?? SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: SALLY SMITH, FULL-TIME STAFF AT UNIVERSITY OF IOWA: It is now official: the IUCCMC’s Executive Committee, on Jan.8, acted to name Sally the second staff person at the University of Iowa. Climaxing months of study, discussion, and prayer, working in closet cooperation, the Local Board and the Commiceion’s Strategy & Ministry and Personnel Committees formed a team to joyfully resolve the staff decision. All of us are deeply grateful for the spirit of understanding and cooperation that has come to fruition through these efforts. “RIGHT ON & ON & ON…” The service Installation for Sally is being planned, and a date will be announced later. INVOLVEMENTS: a bit of the past, more of the present, a smidgen of the future… SOCIAL CONCERNS COMMITTEE: now official, by act of the City Council, this climaxes 7 months of intensive effort – working in small groups and with civic and various groups which might help to secure the peace of our community. Sally helped organize and direct all these efforts. Growing out of the May unrest of the past 2 years, this effort will bring together law enforcement, student, University, city and community leaders in an order way to get an underlying causes of tensions and help ease potentially violent situations (we hope!) TV PANEL: “KICKING IT AROUND”, KCRG, Channel 2, Cedar Rapids. Campus Ministry today at the University of Iowa, was the subject of a 30 minute discussion, Sunday January 16. Sally was a member of a panel of Campus Ministers from the University. Many favorable comments were heard. (Possibility of re-doing this for 16mm movie for wider distribution. DAY CARE CENTER: goin’ strong, with 46 full & part-time students, plus a waiting list. Up-grading salaries, equipment & supplies are current priorities. (CONT. OVERLEAF )
