(a comment by a University professor, after attending the M. Mead Workshop)'....you Campus Ministers don't just talk, but try to find constructive answers to critical problems.......' ISSUES> I.Q. heredity, environment, and racism, as raised by the Atlantic Monthly, article by Herrnstein. Check PSHYCHOLOGY TODAY, March '72, for review of Sandra Scarr-Salapatek insights (U. of Minn. analysis of 922 twins Philadelphia) SOCIAL CONCERNS COMMITTEE: we helped get it started. NOW, CAN IT WORK????CAN IT HELP IDENTIFY AND RELIEVE TOWN-UNIVERSITY TENSIONS AS THEY BUILD AGAIN THIS SPRING??????? WHAT ABOUT FREEDOM????? academic - personal speech - assembly - THIS IS THE BIGIEEEE IS HEALTH, MEDICAL CARE A BASIC HUMAN RIGHT????????Let's assume God has as much interest in the body and mind as in "soul"...... Read the NEWMAN REPORT ON HIGHER EDUCATION?????????Loan copy at OFFICE......... INVOLVEMENT 1. "Changing Family Structure Workshop" and Margaret Mead Lecture ( a mini review Workshop registrants: 430, from 10 states, including from social work, mental health, counselors, adult education, clergy, campus ministers, citizens of area & University professors, students. Evaluations: 60% favor repetition anually...Enthusiastic support for the Workshop theme, method, speakers, arrangements. MIMEO COPIES OF MAJOR SPEECHES AVAILABLE AT 707 MELROSE AVE. Reprints available. TAPES OF MOST SPEECHES AVAILABLE, either purchase or rent. Finances: apparently, its paid-its-way. Report from University in few weeks. FUTURE: THE PLANNING COMMITTEE IS CONSIDERING FOLLOW-UP PLANS. WATCH FOR DETAILS PUBLICATIONS: PRESBY. LIFE requested and received data for major article. WESTMINISTER PRESS also interested in ideas and wants future notices. Reports being sent to a variety of Church magazines and news-sheets. MEAD LECTURE: 1800 in Main Lounge: 700 in New Ballroom (TV, in "free") WSUI re-broadcast the lecture the following Sunday, P.M. Donna Sooby, Chairwoman of the Planning Committee, brought Dr. Mead from Simpson College and was her host. Dr. Mead chose to spend Thur. & Fri. at Donna's home. It was a great week-fitting climax to 1 year planning-fulfilling (exhausting) 2. INTERPRETATION TASK FORCE: teams from the Board continue to accept invitations to talk with Church groups about the University and Campus Ministry. -Davenport, First Pres., March 8, Stephanie Weller, Larry Beaty, Roger Simpson -Lone Tree; date to be decided... - Clinton, First Pres., April 16.... -Davenport, Newcomb Presby; arranged for interp. of Jesus Freaks etc. -Iowa City, First Pres., Sun. April 23, & 30, Panel for adult classes. Stephanie is Task Force Chmn. 3 TV PANEL, WMT, CEDAR RAPIDS: Sally Smith on panel, Sun. AM, with Jim Rogers, "Kicking It Around", discussed Campus Ministry. 4. SOCIAL CONCERNS COMMITTEE., CITY COUNCIL, Sally following up to help activate the Comm. See her DAILY IOWAN editorial, March 6m Since May '71, we have been working to get this Comm. to help reconcile tension areas in University & Community. (Cont. Overleaf)
