[2 emblems - one on left & one on right] United Campus Christian Ministry SERVING THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA CAMPUS COMMUNITY Central Office: 707 Melrose Avenue, Iowa City, Iowa 52240 Phone; 338-2187 Roger Simpson August 6, 1971 Dear Friends: Events here, of current interest about Campus Ministry, include: 1. Daily Iowan, editorial column, "GROKKING." Campus Ministers have been invited by an editor to write a weekly column. We call it "GROKKING." ("Grok" is the Martian word meaning "to understand so throughly that the observer becomes the observed". from Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein.)The enclosed Grokking editorial, by me, calls attention to the danger of militarism becoming our state religion. The Daily Iowan is the dailyUniversity paper. 2. WMT-TV, 2, "Eye on Iowa," Sunday, Aug. 29, 10:30 P.M., I will be on to discuss "Generation Gap" and answer questions. (Hope your set and telephone are working.) 3. City Council of Iowa City has received a formal proposal from a group of us, working since May, to form a SOCIAL CONCERNS COMMITTEE to deal with the issues of tensions and injustice that are related to the "unrest" on campus and in the community over the past two years. We formed a coalition of persons from the University and community to develop this structural approach to reconcilation and understanding. It should be acted on this month. The Des Moines Register and Press Citizen (Aug, 4) reported this in some detail. 4. "The Changing Family Structure" is a workshop we are planning for Feb, 1972. Endorsement has been given by our local Board, The Association of Campus Ministers. We have applied for a funding grant from the National Campus Ministers Assn. They will act in October. 5. The Hoober Health Council (8 country Federal pgm. to design and approve new health care delivery methods) has elected me to their Board. Aug. 12, I meet with their planning committee for the annual meeting. Aug. 20, I will be in a workshop on environmental concerns. Sept. 21, I will be involved in their annual meeting. 6. "Improving Health Care: VD problems" is the theme of a symposium on health care we are scheduling, probably for Oct. It will involve health care personnel institutional representatives and citizens. Our intent is to get at some value issues in our health care system. Southeast Presbytery is jointly sponsoring this with our Board and ACM. 7. The Free Med Clinic, to which I am related via the Board of Directors, finds such growing demand (treated 48 persons one night last week), that will seek to open more than two nights: yet we continue to be without an adequate, "permanent" location. Now, it is in the Catholic Student Center, and will have to move, can't do any birth control information there. 8. Peace Draft Lottery: I helped draw names in the last Peace Draft Lottery of the University-Iowa City, as recorded by picture and article in the Daily Iowan, Aug. 6, 1971. (enclosed). As the lead article states, we "drafted" prominent citizens, including President Boyd, and several military recruiting officiers. My two sons, Ken and John have recently been refused a C.O. by the local Board. CAMPUS MINISTERS: Roger Simpson 338-2187 - Phil Shiverly 337-2187 - Sally Smith 338-2187
