REPEAL THE DRAFT The DRAFT is: * the source of militarism, * the basis of imperialism, and * an explicit denial of man's rights. The DRAFT: * will expire on July 1, 1971 unless extended, * is opposed by Senators Hatfield, Goldwater and McGovern, * was unanimously opposed by the Presidential Commision reviewing the Selective Service System, * is currently opposed by 52% of the population (Harris, 1970). DRAFT REPEAL LEGISLATION: * was introduced by Senators Hatfield, Goldwater and McGovern and voted on by the U.S. Senate on August 25, 1970. * was supported by 35 Senators despite the lack of committee hearnings. * is currently before the Congressional Armed Forces Committees. * will be voted on by the Senate and House within the next eight weeks (unless delayed by unforseen circumstances). IOWA SENATOR'S POSITIONS: * Senator Miller voted against the Hatfield-Goldwateer bill because: "...there is ample time for hearings...; we can better tell next spring during (the) hearings." * Senator Hughes voted for the Hatfield-Goldwater ammendment but shared Senator Kennedy's concerns that 'the army would consist of the poor and the black; the cost is prohibitive and the draft civilizes the army.' yet he is aware of the inequities borne by draftees and favors voluntary service. IOWA COUNCIL TO REPEAL THE DRAFT * is planning a "Repeal the Draft" Week in February. * is organizing Draft Repeal Conferences at State and private colleges. * has signed up over 800 University of Iowa students to write their Congressmen before the final Senate vote. * is circulating petitions in support of bills S. J. 20 and S. 392. * is organizing a Washington Caraven to lobby for draft repeal.
