AD HOC COMMITTEE TO CONSIDER SPRING DISTURBANCES AND TO ATTEMPT TO DESIGN APPROACHES TO RESOLVE THEM Meeting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Leon - May 26, 1971 Present: Jim Davison, Jim Hays, Howie Weinberg. Dick Fedderson, Mike Randall, Don Conroy, Bob Engel, William Connor, Walt Foley, Fred and Betty Leone, Roger Simpson, Sally Smith Action taken: It was decided that we should go to the City Council to ask for the establishment of a Social Concerns Committee that would provide a stabilizing atmosphere for the community as a whole. A small committee of those present is to work at refining this proposal and at plotting strategy for achieving its adoption. This would very likely include the building of support for it in the community before the idea is presented to the Council. The committee: Roger Simpson, Sally Smith, Dick Fedderson, Mike Randall, and Don Conroy, with input welcome from any others. The committee wil send its proposals to all present at this meeting of May 26, for their reactions. Some other ideas and proposals which came forth included the following: (There were pros and cons discussed for most of these" - We need a grand jury review of action by students and police. _ We need to be concerned also about the total picture of criminal justice, comprehensive planning in juvenile delinquency, probation programs. - Could local police follow the state patrol pattern - walk streets, talk with students? - how about a police-student ball game? - Need more mutual exchange and contact between citizens and U. people to lessen isolation and polarization. - Could someone from outside (like Governor, or campus ministers, or Crisis Center, or Social Action of Chamber) make an occasion to ask for Human Relations Lab or something like it? - Ask students, faculty, and businessmen to be monitors next year - this would alleviate police action - need to organize in advance. - How can we open up the community so that students have participation in deciding how community is run? - voter registration is one help (League of Women Voters is working at this). Civic Clubs, which profess to believe in the basic system, need to back this up with more positive action in some way. - The causes for disturbances are so interwoven with the basic problems of society - how can we get at these? - We need something like the Chamber Social Action Committee to continue with broader community support - an ombudsman - someone with more power. - We need to re-institute something like the Scranton Report study - with a mixed group of people. - Create TV program for community dialogue - good vehicle for sharply opposing ideas - could give people a platform - could help clarify issues. - Need Citizen's Action Committee or Town Hall Meeting - give people a forum - talk about nature of environment we live in.
