DAILY IOWAN, April 10, 1071 [photo] Student march to the beat of a muffled drum to the steps of the Old Capitol Friday in a re-enactment of the Passion of Christ in which Christ's trial was played with references to modern individuals who have died for principles like those of Christ. Photo by Linda Taylor Passion A Good Friday event for university students and other members of the community has been planned as the group effort of several campus ministries here. At 12:20 p.m. Friday, a procession will leave Center East, at Clinton and Jefferson Streets, and move to the east approach to Old Capitol on the Pentacrest. The procession will have a large cross at its head and will be accompanied by a drummer. The procession and contemporary service, entitled "Friday: Act II," will consist of dialogue, with a narrator, four voices, and crowd response. "Act II" indicates a modern reflection of Act I, the ordeal and death of Christ, and is set to stimulate concerns for Act III, the future. The dialogue is directed at helping participants and observers relive the Passion, stressing Jesus's approach to peace and how he was attacked by people of his time. And updated litany will include parallel references to modern - day men who have died for principles similar to those of Christ. Events such as the deaths of Martin Luther Kind, Mahatma Gandhi and Medgar Evers; and events such as the death of Jews in World War II, and the bombings in Birmingham, Alabama, will be a part of the litany, to which the crowd response will be "Stand with us!" The Rev. Frank Valainis of the Catholic Student Center said the special service was planned "to show that Christ's suffering was not an isolated or useless experience, but that he, and those who have suffered for similar reasons since, have an effect on our philosophies and lives." The Rev Phil Shively, who works through the United Campus Christian Ministry, said he hoped the event "would show that suffering such as Christ's was not just an event in history, but a real, ongoing contemporary happening." This week marks the first time the university has been in session during Holy Week, and it is important that Good Friday be highlighted in today's terms for those who are on campus," Shively said. The ecumenical service on the Pentacrest will be a prelude to Easter Week services at campus centers for various denominations. Among organizers of "Friday: Act II" were Christus House, the American Baptist Student Center, Wesley Foundation, the United Campus Christian Ministry, the Catholic Student Center and the Anglican Community. Good Friday Services Set Special community services for Good Friday have been announced by the local Religious Leaders Association. A service of Scripture and meditation will be held from 12:10 p.m. to 12:35 p.m. at the United Church of Christ at Clinton and Jefferson Streets. The Rev. Alvin Desterhaft of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church will give the sermon and the Ref. Edward Heininger of the Congregational Church will lead the worship. A recording of the rock opera, "Jesus Christ, Super Star" will be heard at 7:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the Congregational Church. Campus Ministries Plan Good Friday Even[[t?]] Here
