MELROSE DAY CARE CENTER, UCCM Board Iowa City Press-Citizen Feb. 3, 1971 [photo] They Make Their Own 'Spring' Spring seems slow in coming, so children at the Melrose Day Care Center decided to create their own spring --and their own art "happening." Tuesday they painted the snow around their school at 701 Melrose Avenue and "planted" flowers made of such things as cottage cheese cartons and sticks. They used tempera paints and man-sized brushes on the suitably hard old snow. With blues, yellows, reds and greens, they created lots of what they called "moon rocks." Staff members at the school said the children were disappointed today, however, to see that new snow had covered their artistry, although the flowers were still "growing." Today's powdery snow will have to melt a bit and become more compact before the children will be able to make more "moon rocks." (Press-Citizen Photo)
