IOWA ASSOCIATION FOR MEDICAL CONTROL OF ABORTION “Every child has the right to be born into a loving environment, a wanted child eagerly awaited by his parent.” National Association for Repeal of Abortion Laws QUESTIONS AND AWNSWERS ABOUT ABORTION REFORM IN IOWA What are Iowa’s present abortion laws? Iowa’s present abortion laws allow an abortion to be performed only when it is necessary to save the woman’s life. These laws were passed in the 1850’s by legislators who realized that they were circumscribing constitutional rights. However, medical conditions in the expanding new country were so abominable that such surgery far too frequently resulted in death. Why should laws be repealed? These laws should be repealed because today a hospital abortion is six times safer than having a child. The original intent of the law is, therefore, void. The more dramatic reasons are: The present laws force a women to seek an illegal abortionist and help him grow rich. The present laws discriminate according the wealth as an illegal abortion is available to the wealthy ($1,200.00 for a london abortion including trip from Des Moines) while the poor are forced to borrow from a loan shark and get a back alley non-medical abortion or attempt home remedies likely to cripple or kill. The present laws do not cover situations such as a recent one in which a woman with muscular dystrophy (who could not walk, dress herself, or lift her 10-month-old child) became pregnant again. Physically she could deliver the child and, therefore, was ineligible for an abortion.
