Roger Simpson October 4, 1971 about "State Activism" & the question "where is the action now?" Perhaps this editorial offers one insight, from changes seen in SAMA (Student Amer. Med. Assn), generally seen as the "activist" med. students Editorial American Family Physician August 1971 "After devoting a substancial portion of its 1970 meeting to the Kent State tragedy, and the invasion of Cambodia, the Student American Medical Association met this year in St. Louis, and concentrated for the most part on less emotion-laden subjects, including air pollution, generic name prescribing, and day care centers. This changem and it was pervasive, can in no way be attibuted to lessened SAMA interest in social welfare matters, but instead seems to reflect a realization that screaming, shouting, profanity, and oral diarrhea don't get the job done. (Students in all parts of the country seem to have reached this same happy, sagacious conclusion). For whatever the reason, observers came away convinced that the organization wants to do more than make noise and that it wants to be effective in areas where it can be the most effective."
