(2) JONES CO: Phoenix Club members reporting (see names on attached sheet) Phoenix Club: address is Box B, ISR, Anamosa Started about 16 months ago. Focus is education, inside ISR and outside. Can travel to speak to various groups around state, under supervision. Occasionally, overnight stays can be arranged, via a Counselor. Drug Authority asked them to convene 1st meeting of eprsons in District X, which they did Thur., Sept. 2, at Anamosa (Note: here as at other points, a great deal of lively exchange occurred among all present about the nature of drug abuse, personal histories, reporting of some helpful and not-so-helpful treatment experiences, and comments about what should be done.) Mrs. Kouba: there have been miscellaneous drug programs, without much continuity or coordination. There is training for teachers in the school system. IOWA CO: Harold Bezoni, reporting Programs there started by the Sheriff. Called together representative leaders from the community:teachers, clergy, business, professional. A meeting did occur which sought to point up the drug abuse problem. This group has not continued to meet as such (?) Schools have a K+ program - through Junior High (?) All teachers are trained regarding drug abuse. The Kiwanis program is in effect. Special program: many young persons work near the Inter-State Highway , at dfficult hours - get tired - meet persons in drug traffic, etc..... LINN CO: Glen Easterday, Rex Shaffer, Bob Bradley reporting Joint Co. School System (includes Johnson) program: to help schools that want to help themselves. Role is with teachers: training, provides resources, etc. Emphasis is on the human-relations aspect of the problem. Try to keep drug-abuse from being isolated from problem of human relations, communications. See need for humanizing educational process: help teachers be warmer, friendlier persons, etc.... Linn Co. Mental Health Center, under Bd. of Supervisors: provides funds for programs, and monitor the programs. There is a treatment center with a staff. There is a Contact House (near Coe) which has some contact with the drug scene. CAP, Manpower Supervisor: deals with low income younger persons. There is much familiarity with the drug abuse scene. A Basic problem is that of communications between younger persons, parents, authority figures and the established structures. JOHNSON CO.: Kathy Beller, Ted Thrilby, Bernie Wright, Frank Bates, Roger Simpson, reporting: Crisis Center: staff, with phones for receiving and referral of calls. Large number of drug related contacts. Referrals to Psych Hosp., Mental Health Psych Hosp. sees individual persons who have drug abuse problems. Mental Health sees a few drug abuse problems. Citizens Comm. on Alcoholism: considering a "rap session" (Perhaps Sat. A.M.) to be led by Jeff Silverberg of Mr. Pleasant, as a supportive group for persons in community, exiting from some treatment programs. School Systems: elementary school has program, 3-6 grades. In-service training for elementary teachers. Materials available from Bd. of Education. Also, drug info. and ed. is inserted into on-going health education programs.
