[handwritten] Des Moines Register 10-28-71 'CHINA DAY' AT U OF I PLANNED By Larry Eckbolt (Register Staff Writer) IOWA CITY, IA. -- Three American graduate students who recently returned from a month-long visit to mainland China will be among the participants of 'China Day' events to be held on the University of Iowa (U of I) campus Nov. 2. "Given the importance of Sino-American relations today, such events (as China Day) are essential to promoting a greater understanding of the People's Republic of China," said Peter J. Benner, a U of I graduate student from Wellesley, Mass., and a co-ordinator of China Day. Group discussions, slide shows and a panel lecture by the three students who visited mainland China will highlight the day's activities. The three -- Kim and Judith Woodward of Stanford, Calif., and Kenneth D. Levin of Madison, Wis. -- will represent the Committee of Concerned Asian Scholars and were among the 15 young graduate students specializing in China studies who visited the Communist country last spring. The group was able to travel extensively through China and were received by Premier Chou En-lai. They were permitted to photograph within the country as well as speak with the Chinese people in such cities as Canton, Shanghai, Nanking and Peking. China Day will be held in Iowa Memorial Union with the program beginning at 9 a.m. and continuing until evening. The event is being sponsored by Union Board, the Campus Ministers' Association, the U of I Society for China Studies and the Chinese Students' Association, Brenner said.
