To hold service for Attica dead

Two University of Iowa administrators are among those expected to participate in a 4:45 p.m. memorial service today for the 42 prisoners and hostages who died Monday in the riots at Attica State Prison in New York. The service will be held at Center East. 
Philip G. Hubbard, UI vice provost for student services and dean of academic affairs, and Robert E. Engel, assistant to UI President Willard L. Boyd will take part in what Engel calls a "service with a humanitarian emphasis," according to the Rev. Tom Mikelson, who as a member of the United Campus Christian Ministry is helping organize the service. 
The service is "not an occasion for eulogizing the prisoners who died when state police and national guardsmen stormed the prison to restore order, nor is it meant as a protest of official actions in dealing with the Attica prison riot, Mikelson said Wednesday.
"There's been a great deal of agony over the Attica incident," he said. "A lot of sorrow and grief in the midst of confusion."
Mikelson said the campus ministers decided to organize the service after being approached by a number of students concerned over the deaths at the New York prison. 
Asked why he is participating in the service, Engel responded, "Most any human being shares the feeling of sadness in the immeasurable losses to the families of those involved. My participation is just an expression of my own sadness," he said. 
Engel said Monday night he hadn't decided how he would participate in the service.
Hubbard was not immediately available for comment.
