SPECIAL LECTURES: 3 FORUMS ON ENVIRONMENT ISSUES Tuesday, October 5, 1971-Iowa City Press-Citizen-7A Land Use Next Topic In 'Eco-Nomics' Forums The second in a series of three public forums on environmental issues in Iowa City will be held Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Phillips Hall Auditorium on the University of Iowa campus. The series is called "The Economics of Ecology in Iowa City." The subject for this week's forum is "Land Use: Public and Private." Two speakers will present alternative views concerning who does and who should make plans about use of land. They are Prof. James L. Harris, Department of Urban and Regional Planning, UI; and Ben E. Summerwill, president, Iowa State Bank and Trust Co. Members of the sponsoring group, the Special LEctures Committee of the University of Iowa Association of Campus Ministers, anticipate that the issues will include such questions as: How are the rights of individuals versus community versus special interests to be balanced? What criteria should be used in location of industry, urban renewal, parks, etc? What are the relationships between private systems and public property? The basic purpose of the forums is to uncover the values which are at stake as basic economic - ecological decisions are made. Two analysts, for all three forums, will present their understanding of what has been said after initial presentations and questions from the audience. They are Prof. Robert Scharlemann of the UI School of Religion, and the Rev. Tom Mikelson, Unitarian - Universalist Society of Iowa City. The concluding forum on Oct. 13, will be on "Energy Needs and Economic Gowth." The public is invited without charge.
