What the university consistently pushes in "liberal" racism. We're taught that working people have to work in menial jobs for lousy wages because they aren't smart enough to go to college, and that workers are in even worse jobs because they're even dumber. We're taught that black might not be inherently inferior,--they're inferior because they're trapped in a poverty cycle. The American universities will never oppose the real oppression of black workers. At Yale, 50 students were recently suspended after a sit-in demanding that the University rehire a black women who fought back wen she was struck by her foreman. Harvard, the University of Chicago, and other "liberal" universities are expanding into mainly black working class neighborhoods and driving families out of their homes. Most universities in major cities hire large numbers of black workers at miserably low eages--and the schools fight back hard at any real attempts to fight racism by winning more pay for campus workers. THE ROLE OF COP INSTITUTES Cop institutes are one of the best examples of the universities perpetuating racism. Cops are trained to put down just struggles of workers and especially black workers, against their oppressive conditions and in the day to harrassment of theses people. In the Cedar Rapids City Workers' strike which SDS supported, cops were key in breaking the strike by escorting scabs to work. (One student overheard a cop talking about the courses he had at the U of I!) These institutes, such as The Bureau of Police Sciences here at the University of Iowa, are falsely presented as giving the cops a more civilized outlook (Robert Caldwell, professor of Sociology and director of the Bureau, says the program "has a strong emphasis on professionalism in law enforcement.") by courses in sociology, psychology, social research, personality, collective behavior, but in fact only serve to make them more smooth in carrying out the same functions--i.e. keeping blacks from fighting their intolerable conditions. Therefore, the introduction of certain racial and national elements into an area may increase the number of its residents who are likely to come into conflict with law, add to its social disorganization, and thus contribute to its rates of crime and delinquency. from CRIMINOLOGY by Robert G. Caldwell Most of the wealth in this country (85%) is owned and controlled by 0.5% of the population. This small elite, the ruling class, thereby controls the state apparatus of legislature, courts, and police. The very function of this apparatus is to protect the interests of those rulers. More and more cops graduate from these institutes, which are therefore increasingly important to the ruling class, and a good focus for an attack on racism. No amount of education, or liberalism, or good intentions, can change the nature of a cop. Because of their function in capitalist society--because they are absolutely necessary for the ruling class to stay in power-no reform of the police can change their role in doing the dirty work of the rulers.
