OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT BOWEN Dear President Bowen, It has come to our attention that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is now using campus facilities to interview students for employment. In view of the past and present actions of the CIA, we feel that their presence in the as business capacity on this campus is a mockery of the academic honesty. Being a secret, violent, and dictatorial agency, we believe the CIA has no place in a "university community openly pursuing truth and objectivity." Through their support of the dictatorial military juntas, the CIA is responsible for counter-revolutionary atrocities such as the slaughter of over 500,000 Indonesians. Their support of these reactionary juntas has led to such immoral involvements as the war in Vietnam and the Bay of the Pigs fiasco. The CIA is responsible for the suppression of Democracy in the United States as well as in under-developed countries. In the the United States their activities are secret and never subject to open review by the American people. Due to the clandestine activities of agencies such as the CIA, it is not surprising that the American people do not understand how the United States has intervened in Cuba, Indonesia, the Congo and the Dominican Republic. We, as members of Students for a Democratic Society and students of the University if [of] Iowa, demand that you as President take action to affect the immediate expulsion of these agents from the campus and that you make it clear that at no time will they be welcome at this University. If they remain, you may be certain that we will obstruct their activities. Students for a Democratic Society and other concerned students
