page 4-The Daily Iowan-Iowa City, Iowa-Tuesd., Feb.29,1972 The Thunderbolt THE WHITE MANS VIEWPOINT THE NEWS SUPPRESSED BY THE DAILY PRESS JANUARY.1972 ISSUE #145 reprinted from The Thunderbolt The new wave of race scientists By DENNIS NIX Abridged by Dave Helland For hundreds of years the differences between the races have been scientifically explored. From Gobibean to Grant, Ferguson and Stoddard, the findings have been the same-the White Peoples over shadow the negroid peoples of the world. The most serious result of the Egalitarians' denial of Truth has been that it has given the negro the idea that he has a grudge against the White man and the White man the notion the he should feel guilty about the negro. As Carleton Putnam writes, 'The grudge incites the negro to riots and crime, and the guilt leads the White man to a policy of perpetual permissiveness and appeasement... Hence comes the current epidemic of juvenile deliquency from home to the campus to the courts." The official position has been taken; all "facts" must fit that stance (egalitarianism) or else the research is a "bigoted" racist subject to public abuse and scorn. Racism eugenics are the keys to the future. Dr. Arthur Jensen's Thunderbolt The Egalitarian Fantasy World received a shock...his (Jensen's) study revealed anew that blacks score significantly lower on IQ tests...primarily due to their genetic heritage, not to discrimination, poor diet, bad living conditions, inferior schools and the rest of the liberal's list of manufactured myths. To the informed person, nothing new had been added except Jensen's status as a researcher and perhaps his research methods. The same conclusions have been reported for the last fifth (sic) years. The liberal Society fot the Psychological Study of Social Issues unable to dispute the findings themselves attempted to black-wash the methods... Their major point being, if White society is the only game in town, and one needs a high IQ to play, and the IQ test is rigged against the Black people, then the 15 (IQ) point gap might be no more than a reflection of his rigging. Conclusions reached (by Jensen) are: -Genetic factors are strongly implicated in the average Negro-White difference. -Attempts to increase cognitive leraning ability (reasoning) are unlikely to succeed. - Different methods of teaching are needed for those with low cognitive learning ability. "Our disturbed conscience (guilt complex) over the 'historical mistreatment' of Blacks in this country may hinder our ability to ask the right questions and to seek the answers through research." (Jensen) Eugenics Champion - Shockley "My own worry...is that during the next 20 years our well-intentioned social welfare programs may unwittingly lead to the birth of more than a million illegitimate slum babies destined to lives of agonized frustation by being mentally retarded as a result of their genetically controlled components of intelligence." Shockley has repeatedly warned, "our generation may already be on the downgrade od a decline of civilization." In discussing this, "our national negro illness," Shockley says, "I sincerely and thoughfully believe that my current attempts to demonstrate the American negro shortcomings are predominately hereditary is the action most likely to reduce negro agony in the future." "An objective examination of relevant deata leads me inescapably to the opinion that the major deficit in negro intellectual performance must be primarily of hereditary origin and thus relatively irremediable by practical improvements in environments." ... in Experimental Mechanics, Dr. Shockley explains his concern with our national illness-the negro... "Dysgenics," the Nobel laureate explains, is "retrogressive evolution through the disproportionate reproduction of the genetically disadvantaged." The negroes are outbreeding the Whites and the most backward Negroes are outbreeding the few smart ones! Population Pollution "The power to predict, so valuable in engineering, should not be withheld from human quality problems by dogna, no matter how noble. Detailed analysis of the population pollution threat might stimulate invention of humane solutions (one hypothetical solution: voluntary sterilization"). Shockley Herrnstein's IQ Caste System "Educational equality and unrestricted social mobility will lead to a stratified society of hereditary castes," says Harvard professor of psychology Richard Herrnstein.. Reviewing more than a century of research, Herrnstein concludes in the September Atlantic that intelligence is largely hereditary, that IQ influences social status, and that the nation already has a high IQ ruling class and a lower class with IQs below average. At the bottom, he predicts, will settle a human residue "that may be unable to master the common occupations" and were probably "born to parents who have similarly failed." Throughout his article, Herrnstein avoids any direct reference to race but his implications are clear, especially since he draws heavily upon Dr. Arthur Jensen. Herrnstein gives broad and deliberate hints that ghetto rebellions or riots are explained by genetic inferiority. In other words, we shouldn't speak of Negro rebellions, but outbreaks of animal spirit and stealing by slum dwellers. "They're not rebelling because they don't have jobs they could have and are be "They're not rebelling because they don't have jobs they could have and are being denied. They are crazy rebels who are too dumb for these jobs, and that's why they don't have them. So they're rebelling against their genes." Herrnestein himself recognized many of his critics as radicals badly in need of an issue. "Many liberal folks are made rather nervous by the idea of inherited difference in intelligence. The topic is inherently explosive, and the radicals recognized that and exploited it." he continues, "My article is inimical to certain Marxian tenets. Some of the brighter radicals realize just how dangerous my concluisons are to their philosophical beliefs... They make political arguments against me; they picket; they are trying to build a movement." Garrett and Synon For many years Dr. Henry E. Garrett, head of columbia's department of psychology,... has fought desegration of our nation's school system. "Mixing negro and White pupils on a 50-50 basis so as to correct 'racial imbalance' would leave the school administrator with only two choices: he could hold the White standards and have 50 per cent of the negroes fail, drop out or complain loudly of 'discrimination', or he could maintain the negro standards and thereby cheat at least 50 per cent of the White children out of a good education." Recently the Department of Education has boasted of its sucess in decreasing the negro dropout rate...nothing has been said of the quality of education for White students. Professor Garrett counters the environmental theory for negro inferiority by pointing out that...billions of dollars have been spend on improving the Black man's standard of living...and the difference remain the same...Conclusive evidence, that the gap is natural (genetic) and not acquired. Columnist and rece researcher John J. Synon, says "What to do with the expectational Black who can and does compete on equal terms with his White counterparts? Should such a Black be integrated into White classrooms? "No. Only one black in 100, the Armed Forces test show has an IQ of 110, the minimum needed to do acceptable college level work. Take those relatively few gifted Black men from their kind and you trip their race of its best people. And Blacks have enough problems without being deprived of their natural leaders." Eysenck enters the IQ Argumeny "Americans will get along better when they stop pretending that all their black, white, brown and yellow countrymen are 'equal', suggests an Englishman (H.J. Eysenck). Research Today Parallels Findings 45 Years Ago One interesting aspect is the research done by a former folksinging governor of Louisiana, Jimmie Davis. In a 16-page Master's thesis written in 1928 Davis claimed a Negro's intelligence is determined by the amount of white blood in his veins. After testing 700 white, mulatto, and black children to determine their intelligence, Davis reported, "I found a decided difference in scores, respectively... Amoung the mulatto children, the highest scores were made by children of more than three-quarters white blood, the best scores being made by a children with the least negro blood." ...Shockley says, the intelligence quotient (IQ) of Negroes may increase with the ratio of Caucasian genes to Negro genes at about a rate of one IQ point for every one per cent of Caucasian genes. Facts of Racial Science Blatantly Surpressed A careful documentation of this suppression (of the inferiority of blacks) was presented by Dr. William Pierce. "Negroes, for example, on the average, have brains which are substantially smaller than those of Caucasians, Negro skulls are thicker, their cranial structure more primitive, and their cranial sutures fuse at an earlier age than is the case with Whites. This is not racist theory, but scientific fact... It was, until a few years ago, readily accessible to the inquiring reader in any encyclopedia worthy of the name," The true scientists have always been rare. Those who were able to recognize Truth amid the prejudices and dogmas of their day and then were willing to sacrifice for the sake of that Truth were few. In the past, Bruno, and Galileo made the sacrifice. Today Jensen, Schockley, Eysenck, Garret and a few other battle the entrenched Egalitarian host. Editors' note: This, unless you have already guessed, is the editorial page of The Daily Iowan. Published here today are a number of selections from The Thunderbolt, the official newspaper of the National States Rights Party, concearning racial issues in general and Herrnstein in particular. Also appearing here are local reactions to the visit of herrnstein to this campus and subsequent events. Hopefully this will provide the reader with a broader understanding of the whole controversy. [PICTURE] GOD BLESS AMERICA reprinted from The Thunderbolt A sad 125th birthday Friday, February 25, 1972, marked the 125th anniversary of the founding of the University of Iowa. Earlier in the day sincere and eloquent statements were made about the importance of that event and of the magnificient contributions to State and Nation made by the University of Iowa during the 125 years of its existence. Sadly, the day ended with an event which denied the most fundamental principle in which a university is built, namely, the determination to champion the fearless pursuit of truth, and the corollary commitment, to listen to all points of view, no matter how unpopular those views may be to some persons, whether they be on or off the campus. The University community is well aware of the event to which I refer. A speaker was brought to the campus by an academic department and invited to deliver a scholarly paper based upon his research. When he arrived at the meeting place he was confronted with a hostile audience (actually a minority of the audience) which had created an atmosphere in which no scholarly paper could possibly have been given. Quite understandably, the talk was cancelled. Oh, yes, there are those who say that the speaker refused to give his talk. This is nonsense. When it is clear to all that no useful purpose will be served by attempting to give a talk under intolerable conditions, one is engaging in rationalization when he excuses the behavior of a group by saying that the speaker refused to give his address. I sencerely hope that the students, faculty and administrative staff of this University will not allow this event to pass without expressing in the strongest terms their disapproval of the conduct of those who were responsible for denying academic freedom to an invited guest of the University. What happened in the Physics building last Friday afternoon is a sad reflection on the capability of the University community to guarantee that it will indeed see to it that academic freedom is assured to all members of the University community and its guests. Let us not continue to make excuses for our failure to deal effectively with disruptive behaviour on the part of a minority of our members. I am very sure that ten years ago we would not have tolerated the kind of behaviour which was exhibited by certain individuals (not all were Iowa students, but some Iowa students must have given them aid and comfort) in the Physics Auditorium and adjacent corridor last Friday afternoon. Why do we tolerate such behavior now? It behooves every member of the University community to ask himself that question and to resolve that such disruption shall not be permitted to happen again. If the courts and legal technicalities now prevent us from dealing effectively with such problems, then let us seek corrective action through appropriate channels. To do less may well mean the eventual demise of the very values which are and have been the very heart and soul of every great university. When reason is replaced with mindless emotion and civility with name-calling and obscenities, then a true university community no longer exists. Dewey B. Stuit 108 Schaeffer Hall "Hypocritical" victory To the editor: Worker Student Alliance or the SDS, received a big black eye and lost much respect over the way they acted at the Physics Research Building in the Herrnstein demonstration. For two weeks prior to Friday W.S.A. spent all their time handing out pamphlets and leaflets. These leafleats usually had a swastika on Herrnstein's face, and to the side of it there were actual statements that appeared from the Atlantic Monthly. These statements were taken out of context, and were completely distorted. Anybody who read the original article could see the distortions. For example the W.S.A. phamphlet states; "the sample contained an excess of Western and Northern European Jews, and a shortage of Latins, non Jews, Eastern European, and Negroes. The phamphlet fails to point out that Herrnstein felt the sample was unfair fot that reason. If W.S.A. was sincere in showing the fallacies of Herrnstein's article they should have reprinted the original. I also wanted to hear Herrnstein speak. I disagree with a good portion of what he says, but he's not an overt racist. He's a man who wrote an article on his findings, and other peoples findings. As a free man he has the right to his opinion. The final disgrace was in the Physics Research Building. Kids were not allowed into the lecture as it was filled. So W.S.A. began to heckle the police and given cheers comparing Herrnstein to Hitler. The lecture was over and a gray haired man in his fifties walked out. He was the man who got Herrnestein to come to the lecture. W.S.A. gathered around and instead of talking intelligently, they called him a mother fucker and other selective words. One kid suggested beating him up. The man couldn't speak a word. W.S.A. called it a victory, I call a very sad and hypocritical. Dan Sneider Rienow II SDS brownshirts To the Editor: For all too long the right-wing facist pigs in this country have been allowed to spread their political filth throughout this great land under the doctrine of "free speech". It warms my heart that those brave lads of the S.D.S., those degenders of freedom and liberty, have finally freed us all from having to hear such garbage! If this wonderful group would only change their blue workshirts for brown and learn to march in step, we could be even more confident in the knowledge that protection from ideas defferent from our own would be assured. There cheers for "Richt be assured. Three cheers for "Richt Think"!! [cuted text] Gordon D. Hilton, Office of Public Information. Herrnstein is irresponsible Most of the arguments raised about Prof. Richard Herrnstein's non-appearance have missed the point. For example, in a letter to the editor last week the point was made that censorship has never led to the ultimate defeat of a good idea or the sucess of a poor one. That's a good point, but easily refuted. Hitler's use of censor-ship didn't win the war but increased the conditions and allowed enough time for the murder of six million Jews. Herrnstein's theories could part of what is needed for a reactionary group to start the same process here. Both sides miss the point. Another popular tactic has been to argue by syllogism. Last week Jerry North presented a syllogist that showed that Herrnstein is a racist if you except all four conditions of North's argument. Few people would accept all four conditions, so Herrnstein is not a racist. But I could construct a syllogism that proved Herrnstein was racist. It all depends on what conditions you pick and if you can get people to accept them. They syllogistic arguments mean little. An argument raised last Friday before Herrnstein's decision not to speak is equally bogus. Someone in the crowd suggested that since Herrnstein is human and we should be nice to humans then we should be nice to Herrnstein by letting him talk about pegeons and not to bring up the Atlantic article. This seems to me to be simply an excusse used by a psych major to get all those disgusting people to leave him alone so he could do his research in peace. The valid point about the Herrnstein controversy is that of academic responsability. Professors talk a lot about their need for academic freedom but they say little about their responsabilities other than to present the truth as they say it. This assumes that their is no world outside the ivy tower that Herrnstein operates in. There are real consequences to the research done by scientists that have to be considered. Simply, in a racist society a scientist is obliged to think out the effect his work will have when he theorizes about racial differences just as in a militarist society (Nazy Germany, for instance) a scientist should have considered the use that his theories or research on the atom would have. To do less is to be irresponsible. Herrnestein showed his academic irresponsability under the guide of academic freedom in three ways. First, his article "IQ" was poorly written. It is as open to interpretation, reinterpretation and misinterpretatio as the Biblical story of creation. Herrnstein equates intelligence to IQ without proof. He glosses over the bias that standardized tests have against the "outs" in society wheter they be blacks, women or immigrants. In addition, his psychological theorizing about unemployment doesn't take into consideration the economics of the situation. His theorizing about meritocracy doesn't take in consideration the fact that civil rights legislation is yet to be adequately anforced and until it is any conclusion about education, class and intelligence is at best premature. Second, I question the wisdom of presenting a complex, highly theoretical article in a mass circulation magazine. Most readers of scholarly journals know enough to take what they read in those journals with a grain of salt. The same is not true to the layman reading Atlantic. Herrnstein seems to realize this because in several parts of the article he says that a particular conclusion must be assumed by the reader to be true because its proof is too technical, too long or is unrelated to the central argument. Skipping from the beginning to the end without explaining how you made the jump on such an inflamatory subject seems to me to be irresponsible. Third, Herrnstein is irresponsible in that he has refused to debate his findings. Sharing in this guilt are the editors of Atlantic, the University's psychology department and many of the spectators Friday who came to hear Herrnstein talk about pigeons. The reasons these three groups share in the irresponsability are, respectively, the lack of a reasoned rebuttal to Herrnestein in Atlantic (comment has been reserved to letters to the editor); the lackadaisical attempts to get Herrnstein to change the topic of his speech or to give two lectures, and the pigeon people's cat-calls and jeering and refusal to descuss the article when sds-ers and blacks at the lecture tried to initiate a discussion of the topic before Herrnstein was due to speak. The university is supposed to be the market place of ideas. Herrnstein himself and not sds violated this concept when he refused to debate his conclusion. Simply stating what one beleives is not enough. Along with that is the obligation to defend what one has said. Herrnstein has not yet done this. Remember, it was Herrnstein who refused to talk about race and it was he who decided not to give lecture. Unless someone has some telepathic insight into the minds of the radicals (and the professors) who wanted to question Herrnstein, there is no proof that they were going to disrupt an attempt by Herrnestein to talk about race. They claimed they wanted to engage in a dialogue with the visiting professor and there is no proof to the contrary that that is not what they would have done had Herrnestein and the department of psychology given them the chance. Maybe what happened to Herrnestein Friday is the same as what happens to anyone who does not behave responsibly. He lost his freedom because he abused it. Dave [Helland ?]
