COMMITTEE TO ABOLISH ROTC DEBRUARY 12 AT 7:30 PM IN THE HARVARD ROOM, IMU ROTC WHAT DOES ROTC DO? ROTC provides 80% of the officers neccessary to fight the war in Vietnam. ROTC officers led American troops into the Dominican Republic to protect American sugar interests. ROTC officers help keep Guatemala "free" for the United Fruit Company. ROTC officers at home have led the army and National Guard in trying to crush the rebellions of black workers against their oppression. ROTC officers load the National Guard to break strikes of workers, such as in Vermont during the recent G.E. strike. WHY FIGHT AGAINST ROTC? A struggle against ROTC is a concrete way thounsands of students can fight against the war in Vietnam. The enemy in this situation is not the ROTC cadets. While some may favor the war, many cadots join mainly for the scholarship or to avoid the draft and can be won to opposing ROTC. (These acholarships should be continued if ROTC is abolished.) Some people question whether abolishing ROTC would really do any good. Col. Poll, head of the ROTC at Harvard, answers this clearly in his appeal to maintain the program: "Let it be understood beyond question that there is at present no acceptable alternative source of junior officer leadership if ROTC is driven from the college Campus." CAN WE DEFEAT ROTC? YES! Last spring at Harvard thousand of students fought hard against and defeated ROTC. The University called police on campus to save its pal ROTC but the students took them on too and won with a mass student strike. SMASH ROTC -- FIGHT TO WIN A committee to abolish ROTC training at SUI is being formed. This committee is open to anyone interested in a campaign opposing ROTC. The first meeting will be Thursday, February 12 at 7:30 PM in the Harvard Room of the union. SUI/sds
