UI FACULTY SENATE WILL PROBE HERRNSTEIN CASE The University of Iowa Faculty Senate will investigate circumstances surrounding the demonstration against Harvard psychologist Richard J. Herrnstein Feb. 26 which resulted in Herrnstein refusing to speak as scheduled. UI Provost Ray L. Heffner announced the faculty investigation early this afrernoon and said the University administration would ''cooperate fully ... in a mutual exploration of ways in which the essential freedom of the campus can be effectively meintained.'' Heffner said further that he had asked the Dean and Executive Committee of the College of Liberal Arts to recommend ''appropriate action'' regarding one professor's class cancellation in response to the Herrnstein incident. John B. Henneman, associate professor of history, cancelled his 12:30 p.m. class in medieval civilization today because he said he felt the UI administration had failed to publicly oppose demonstrations such as the one against Herrnstein. Henneman said Sunday he could not understand why the provost's office had not condemned action by the protestors, most of whom were affiliated with Students for a Democratic Society or the Worker-Student Alliance. Heffner said today that ''faculty members have a primary obligation to their students, and to the university, to meet their classes and to preserve the continuity of the educational process.'' By failing to meet his class, Henneman violated the Code of Faculty Conduct and Ethics, Heffner said. Henneman said he had no comment for the press regarding Heffner's decision. He said however, he did plan to meet with his 3:30 p.m. class today. Meanwhile, still another letter from a faculty member has protedted the UI administration's response. Roger D. Milkman, professor of zoology, sent a letter to Gov. Robert Ray alleging that ''the senior members of the university administrations have remained absent or silent regarding the Herrnstein protest''. Milkman urged the governor ''to institute a full investigation of the affair, with public hearings as part of the procedure.'' UI administration Friday withdrew recognition of the WSA as a campus organization until April 7, an action currently also imposed on the SDS. The ban means that neither group may use university facilities.
