THE FANTASITE 27 AMONG THE HAMS AND PROS -- Continued from page 10. the fans who have expressed an opinion favorably about Technocracy from time to time are enemy spies and such. Which we know damn good and well is a lie. Technocracy as an ideology we personally found utterly hopeless years back, but that doesn't stop us from thinking that anyone who would pull a dirty, underhanded stunt like this the lowest kind of belly-crawling back-stabber. Van Houten is the kind of person one finds fictionalized in modern novels.-------- --- Joseph Gilbert --------------------------- --------------------------- A late letter from LARRY B. FARSACI: I really enjoyed the first anniversary issue and am still amazed upon counting the number of pages!!! My gosh, the fanzine as it is -- for its size, format, and price -- even as a "hobby" mag, is a believe-it-or-not item to anyone who should chance upon it, -- outside of the fantasy field, of course! Morrie's cover picture was very unique -- also reminiscent of Dold. Which reminds me; I'm very eager to place an order for his "new-idea" mag COLOSSUS announced so long ago, but still to be published. ((To our knowledge, Morrie's proposed publication is more-or-less an idea which he plans to put into effect--conditions permitting--in the future, sometime.)) The feature article by Doc Lowndes was also great and brought back many memories. All the other little articles made good reading, even the MFS Notes. The only little draw-back I can think of is the fact that the mimeophotos weren't as clear as they could have been, but still they are all passable, and more than made up for by the real photographs. Coming to think of it, I think I rather liked the nebulous effect of that first frontispiece mimeophoto. The book reviews by Sam Russell were masterly, and were especially enhanced by his method of dividing them into: Plot and Evaluation. Among the Hams and Pros is always a good dept. -- whether in Pluto (defunct) or Fantasite. I was wondering, incidentally, if I could have Don Wandrei's address in the army. I meant to write him years ago with some queries regarding some of his published articles and stories, and still intend to get around to it. ((We haven't Wandrei's address at present, but shall attempt to get it.))--------------------------------------------- And A Still later one from LESLYN HEINLEIN: The first anniversary issue of The Fantasite is a very fine looking fan-mag. I wish to make a couple of corrections, tho. Bob and I neither care for undeserved bouquets nor brickbats aimed at someone else. Joe Gilbert in the article "Among the Hams and Pros" seems hypped on the idea that Heinlein is almost any previously unidentified author. The author of "If You're Smart" (April Astounding) is not Heinlein, but a gentleman of whom we know, but have never met. He lives in New York City. Cleve Cartmill is not only not Heinlein-- (April "Unknown" review) but one of our closest friends. If you'd read Julie Unger's newsletter during last August you would have seen that Bob and I were best man and matron of honor at the Cartmills' wedding. Cartmill is an experienced and accomplished newspaperman, and is quite capable of writing excellent dialogue, etc.-------------------------------------- APOLOGY DEPT: In the last issue, the sonnet printed under Larry B. Farsaci's name should have been credited to W. B. MacQueen. Also the "get" in the last line should have been "want", thus: "We want them back, to dream with them again." And, further, there should be a period after "pass" in the fourth line. Our thanks to Harry Jenkins for these corrections, and our apologies to MacQueen! ---- John Gergen announces that TYCHO is nearly ready for mailing and it will probably be out before this issue of Fantasite, unless we hurry!! You'll be seeing another Dollens litho-cover on TYCHO, soon. While on the subject of fanzines, the newest arrivals have been: NOVA, SPACEWAYS, SUN SPOTS, LE ZOMBIE, and SPACE TALES. Orchids to all, with the exception of the last on the list. Special praise is due the editors of NOVA; the 2nd issue is a wonderful piece of work, and contains some dandy material, too.------------------------------------------------ Title headings on pages 3 and 8 by BOB JONES -- back cover by MORRIE DOLLENS
