ALCHEMIST 19 A NOTE ABOUT THE OUTSIDER & OTHERS AUGUST DERLETH With approximately half the limited and only edition of THE OUTSIDER AND OTHERS, by the late, great H. P. Lovecraft, now gone, it is noteworthy that none of the buyers of this bizarre masterpiece has even so much as hinted that he has not had more than his money's worth. We -- Don Wandrei and myself -- have had complaints about the $5 price before purchase, but nary a one after the book's delivery. Nevertheless, by circuitous routes, we learn that there are many fans who continue to feel that $5 is too much to ask for THE OUTSIDER AND OTHERS. As far as we have been able to determine, this feeling persists only among those who have never seen the volume. But even to those fans, some explanation should be made. As all fans know, no money is ever made on memorial volumes. Don Wandrei and I have spent almost two years assimilating material for the proposed three-volume memorial to H. P. Lovecraft, and the actual cost of typing and supplies, plus postage, all of which came out of our pockets, has amounted to over $1000.00. The result is that some millions of worlds of Lovecraft's work now reposes in our files, awaiting publication: the largest collection of Lovecraft material anywhere in existence! Publication cost of THE OUTSIDER & OTHERS came to $2100.00. Anyone who has seen the book will understand that. there is nothing cheap about the
