FANTASIA 21 ODDS BODKINS! ART JOQUEL, II 1426 W. 38th St. Los Angeles, Cal Publisher of FMZ Digest & Astrastring, observes: "The second Fantasia whacked through my mail-slot just an hour ago...I grabbed it eagerly and read every word of it. And gosh, boy, whoops and stuff! How do you do it? Gee, it's a good thing there aren't a couple more like you up north...Those illustrations! Those illustrations! Gosh, I've got to take time out from my typing to look at them again...The cover and the poem illustration are the best, of course. Best thing in the issue outside of the pics was Harold Elliot's Hypothesis. The whole thing is a super-Gilbert&Sullivanish patter which left me in a state of roaring laughter. If you are familiar with the song My Name Is John Wellington Wells, in The Sorcerer, you'll know what I mean. And those lines: By mass-relativity's startling proclivities. Oh my, oh my! If this had been your sole contribution to the fan field, it would have been enough to make your magazine's fame...Djinn Fizz in this issue was better than last, I think. And here's how I liked the issue, in order: Illustrations; Hypothesis; Man the Space-Rockets; Djinn Fizz; Rendezvous; Epic; and the rest in a bunch together. (Art has reprinted Hypothesis and Man the Space-Rockets in the third issue of his FMZ Digest, marking the first time he has carried two items from any single fan-mag. We're sincerely honored)...How's about pictures of Falstaff and the ManInTheBlueTopper in coming issues?" (We planned it that way.) DON FORD 96 W 9th Ave Columbus, O. Quote: "Fantasia arrived two or three days ago and the full-page illustration was terrific! Wow! Mellow! In the groove!...The cover and inside cuts and headings were the best to be found in the fan-mag field. I like your expiration notice. Epic was #1; Let There Be Art, #2; Man the Space-Rockets, #3. Found Wanting was good; I always found poetry rather difficult to write. Hypothesis was amusing; I liked the meter. I think Rendezvous was out of place." HARRY WARNER, Jr 303 Bryan Place, Hagerstown, Md. A guy who likes his water with salt in it: "This (April) issue is even better than the first, which is saying a great deal. The illustrations are marvelous; how in the world you did the little cuts with such a crude medium is one of the things I'd like very much to know. (Blood & toil, sweat & tears) And the pictorial insert is something Bok would be very proud to have done, I'm positive...The mimeoing is unquestionably the best in the fan-field. I'm particularly envious of the sharp but not thick lettering. Pluto seemed to be about tops as far as format goes, but Fantasia has made me think differently!...I thought the best story was Rendezvous; the atmosphere is even better than that of Fischer's sea-story reprints in the Munsey magazines, I assert with little fear of contradiction...The best poem was Hypothesis, and the best article Waldeyer's...Remember? is very nearly up to Rendezvous' quality, while Epic seemed a bit over-written to me. I put Hypothesis over the other two poems mostly for its unique quality and because the other two aren't really fantastic any more than a cave-man story...In case you're collecting ratings: Remember, 7; Epic, 5; Rendezvous, 8; Found Wanting, 6; Hypothesis, 8; Eastern Sketch, 6; Pictorial, 10!; Let There Be Art, 6; Man The Space-Rockets, 7; Djinn Fizz, 6; Letters, 7; Editorial Page, 8."
