A WORD OF EXPLANATION President Dunkelberger has asked me to give some explanation of the various points that were covered in the NFFF Constitution that was presented while I was President. Having been active in NFFF organizational work almost since it was first started, both as Chairman of the Long Range Planning Committee for one year, and about two years as active President, there were quite a number of things that came up from time to time which were not covered in teh first Constitution. It was to cover these things that various items were considered necessary. Quite a lot of power was delegated to the various officers, but there were checks and balances for each such power delegated. Each part of the Constitution was written to cover the things that had been found from experience to be necessary to successfully continue the growth and activity of the organization. I was especially sorry to see the Judiciary voted down, and I am sure it will later become necessary. The Constitution, as presented, was the work not just of myself, but the collaboration of Ashley, Wiedenbeck, Counts and myself, with some additional assistance from other fen who visited Slan Shack. It was then submitted to the Officers and Directors, and several other influential members, and their suggestions were incorporated in the final version as submitted to the voters. Just as we were about the mail out the issue of our Official Mag containing the proposed Constitution, Speer came to Slan Shack, and at once started writing the one he also presented. Surprisingly, Ashley sided with him, without discussing it with me, even though we were living in the same house. I could easily not have included his version, by stating that it would have to get the OK of the Officers and Directors, the same as mine had done. But I wanted to be fair, and let the members decided what they wanted. So it was included. It is not my purpose, nor ever was, to try to "run" the NFFF. I tried to do what I could to help build up a National organization, as I felt from the many talks and letters I had had with various fen that such an organization was both needed and wanted. Feeling that I had some slight talents as an organizer, I was willing to put them to work for the good of the Fandom which I so enjoy. Admittedly the new Constitution is not perfect; that it could stand some revision, particularly in the wording. But this I do so well know from long and bitter experience -- each single thing in it is needed in order to make such an organization as the NFFF, where almost everything has to be done by mail, work with any fair possibility of success and without too great delays. It is rather amusing to me, that those who are now so prominent in finding fault, and planning to "run" the organization, are among those who had nothing much to do with the hard work of making it an alive and growing concern. When it was almost dead, they were not interested. Now that it is a fairly large and growing concern, they are ready to "muscle in". Well, more power to them, if that is what the rest of Fandom wants. Anyway, I did my durndest, and if it was not good enough, I'm truly sorry. E. Everett Evans Ex-President, N.F.F.F. 4
