Chicanos in Iowa: Prospects for the future and Evaluation Speaker- Robert Leos Miguel Juan Juan Cardena Robert Leos: People have remarked that they weren't sure how many people were going to be at this workshop because they weren't sure what the prospects for the future for Chicanos in Iowa really Is. I think that anybody who would think that the prospects were not positive, they need to reconsider. There has been progress in the last couple of years regarding the size of the Chicanos. There's alot of problems but at the same time the indication is that theres a new analysis of the current situation here in the State of Iowa. There's a new interpretation, people are becoming more aware of the things that have come to play the factors that have played in the educational problems that we have. The fact that Chicanos are still receiving a poor education in the State of Iowa. The fact that the economic situation for Chicanos is still very poor, the housing situation, there are many problems, but there has been rays of hope we have George Garcia of the State Department, which is not the answer to the problem but at the same time it is entirely a step forward. Miguel Juan and Juan Cardena have been actively involved in working with the Spanish-Speaking people, mostly in the Governer's Task force within the last few months have been
