we have had Chicanos Iowans at the turn of the century. We should also have Chicano Iowans in all ranks of this society, and yet we can only find the, in the service areas. Very very few in the professional ranks and unfortunately the professional ranks are over flooded by imported Spanish Speaking aliens. The universities in the state have chosen to abide by the affirmative action plan by hiring the students that come to do graduate work in the universities. And this is how affirmative action is being used here in Iowa . But by large Chicanos in Iowa are not being hired by any institution and government. In my surveys of collage sand universities I found 1 Chicano out of 7,000 faculty members. That's one Chicano out of 7,000 that is hired by our institutions such as U of I Iowa State, UNI. In fact our public or state institutions have done a very good job of recruiting Spanish-Speaking foreigners, from other countries I mean. They have recruited as many S-S from other states than they have from Iowa. So the institutions that are designed to serve Iowans is not serving our Spanish Speaking Iowans. So if we are going forward with a movement, we also have to remember what Valdez told us "We are alone, we can't expect crowds behind us we can only expect ourselves to be there. It's very frustrating because no one is going to thank-you for getting involved, in fact you might even be blamed for a few mistakes that we might make. It's easier to identify mistakes, than it is to identify some success. If we have had a movement in the State of Iowa, a Chicano
