Minutes of meeting Oct. 14, 1979 -- page 4 III. Rusty began discussion on the naming of this Chicano alumni association and presented the first suggestion which she credited to Arturo Ramirez, the... "Iowa Chicano-Indian American Student & Amigos Association," or CASA; and using, as a letterhead, an ink drawing of the CIASU which a current student, Andy Rodriguez, has already begun. Rusty called on Arturo for an explanation of this title, CASA. Arturo started by saying that the above title was not exactly correct. Hd stated that the original proposal had been the Iowa CASA Foundation, in which CASA would represent "Chicano Alumni, Students & Amigos." He explained that in earlier years, whether one was Chicano or Indian, a student always referred to the Chicano Indian American Cultural Center (CIACC) as "La Casa" or "The House". There was some discussion, from others present, concerning the exclusion of Indians from this title suggested by Artur(o), but he responded that we could not, nor should we, argue for the Indians without first obtaining their opinion on the matter. He continued that "we are Chicanos, fighting for our own Foundation. They (Indians) are us, our Brothers"; A title alone cannot exclude them if we feel in our hearts and minds that they are our people too. The Martin Luther King foundation awards scholarships to students that are not Black, decisions are not made based on race or color alone. There is no reason why a Chicano association cannot give scholarships to their Indian Brothers and Sisters, Puerto Rican Brothers and Sisters, or others...
