Minutes of meeting Oct. 14, 1979 -- page 6 A graduate of the UI law School, Steve is now a professor of law at Drake University, here in the heart of Iowa. A round of applause was given for Steve in recognition of this accomplishment. The motion was passed unanimously. (Insert 6B here!) The articles of incorporation are being written to get us chartered as a non-profit organization. We need only one (1) incorporator and that person does not have to be from within the state of Iowa. Only our purpose is necessarily important. Arturo Ramirez - "We want to support Iowans (students) who want to go anywhere in the country and we want to support the enrichment of those (students) from outside Iowa who want to come to Iowa." Steve Rocha said that he would try to gave a tentative draft to the papers by the end of October so that Rusty Bercelo could get a newsletter out by mid November. V. Arturo Ramirez reported on his meeting with David Vernon which took place this past Thursday, OCt. 11, 1979. David Vernon is a professor of law at the University of Iowa who has long supported Chicanos, and even more so, Indians, in institutions of higher education. He even has an "Indian Power" poster on the wall in his office. Vernon helped Pedro Rael, Andy Roberts, and others who have gone throught the law school, with special introductory programs he developed. Professor Vermon also worked with President Boyd to write the papers to start Special Support Services. Vernon and Boyd are good friends. Professor Vermon encouraged our group to continue its efforts to establish a foundation and said that he would speak to President Boyd about it. They will write to us and later we can discuss the foundation with them. Vernon also said that he would present our idea for a foundation to the UI Alumni Association and would give us suggestions from them.
