strange interlude ANONYMITY ANNONS Robert A Heinlein Fanfare seems like a very good fan magazine indeed. I especially enjoyed DOTS, which I take it you wrote. I don't seem to find a name on it. I believe I enjoy the reportorial articles, such as this one, more than most of the stuff printed in fan mags. (Blush blush--ed.) Probably a lot of the fiction in fan mags is good, too, but I don't read much of it. I don't have the time to read a third of the professional stuff! I also enjoy articles of literary criticism and comment. Doc Lowndos has a good one in the issue at hand. The book seems to be free of the snide and semi-libelous articles which, to my mind, are the curse of fandom. I get particularly annoyed at anonmynous articles of such calibre. Why are anonymous articles tolerated at all? If they are harmless, the author should not mind signing his name; if they are not harmless, they should not be published at all. I class anonymous articles with anonymous letters and anonymous telephone cells- the media of cowards and scoundrels. ANNOUNCEMENT Frank McCourt I am trying to start a New York stf club on the Upper West Side. I'll be glad to answer inquiries and give the dope on aims etc, to New Yorkers who can call in person at 516 W 140th, after 8 PM, preferably Tuesday nights. The telephone is EDgecombe 4 - 5927. Feudists welcome. ENGLISH ENCOMIUM Ken Bulmor Cover--excellent. 4sj Ackerman's lithe process, oh? It adds a touch of finesse to the mag, much in the way that a silver bow invites on a chocolate box. DOTS - good. Very interesting. Strangely enlightening to we here who may have ideas about the inpreganbility of editors. I was particularly tickled by the captivating description of the "Great Man's" slipper cum centrifugal force experiment. The last sentence of that description of the evening's enjoyment carries the truth of the ages. STF RECOLLECTIONS -- good. Evidently written by an okd hand. LINES FROM THE LAST GRAVE - I can't seem to get a clear impression of its impact on me. If you must have a rating, would certaintly suggest upwards of ho hum. Certain passages strike very deep cords. SLANDER--excellent. Er - I feel a wee bit guilty about having used it in FANTASY POST. SLANDER carried a punch, and the seeds of a true prophecy. AS IF IT MATTERED is rather incoherent. Doc has some good points in the earlier portion, but goes off onto another subject, and then ends up with a project, which, although sounding fine at first, resolves itself into a dispensation of "to be read" or "not to be read" by the committee. No two fans are alike in taste: and, although many fans may have the same preferences on the upper class stories, the smaller, often well remembered shorts would thus be
