the good work, don't let the old flag slip down the mast. Howver, some cartoons would pep things up. We all like the funny papers, and life today is too dreary, so how about getting some of that delectable humor of yours in? (Oh g'wan, teehee--ed) ANSWERS Milty Rothman Goody! Another found at last. Life once more become interesting ....Had I not long since grown out of the idea that everybody must love me, the letters by Lou Goldstone and this "sinnyk-uhss" would have thrown me into the depths of despair. As it is, I am gratified to see that Lowndos, at least, still sticks by me. Being forced into a strategic retreat by Goldstone, let me restate the sentence in which my flair for rhetoric led me to grief: Pegler is despised by all liberals whose opinions I have seen or head. THat still covers a lot of territory. It includes contributors to periodicals such as the New Republic, the Nation PM, In Fact, union organs -- and it includes a lot of pretty good people. For Goldstone to condemn their manner of thinking is to say the least, impudent. For him to say what I advocate and believe in is, likewise impudent. The belief is tolerance and humanity which he attributes to me as a typical "liberal" are inconsistent with each other. One cannot beleive in humanity and still tolerate those things which are inimical to humanity. THerefore, I am not a tolerant person and have made no claim as such. That which goes by the name of social tolerance is a belief that undesirable things cannot be wiped out by forbidding them, but by removing the cause which bring them into existence. That does not eliminate the intitial dislike for the undesirable things. It would be interesting to hear Gladstone's position on subjects under discussion: his opinion of Pegler, what he believes real liveralism is, and the names of some people he considers real liberals. (Incidentally, if it proves anything, Pegler, himself, is a self-styled liberal.) Turning to sinn-yk-uhss, whoever he is: If a knowledge of my abilities and limitations, and a belief that I belong in a better position than the one in which I am now represents conceit - then, glory be, I am the most conceited person in the world. The point sinny misses is this: The person who sits and whintes that the world does not appreciate him will not be found actively striving to better his position. Sure, I've howled a lot. I've acted up something awful -- in specific instances when the order of things as they were stopped me in my progress. I mantain no illusiona bout that sort of thing. THere is no denying that had things been as they should be in a civilized worl di would have had an easier time of it. But I have no waited for scholarships to put me thru school. I am saving the money I make at the clerk job and that will bring the scientist part to fulfillment. Therefore the description of me as being in passive revolt - that is, being sorry for myself and doing nothing about it, is not only untrue, but something deeply to be resented. FANFARE mantains a high standard. I read it all. Cover: Figure and lines should have more curve and sweep to them. DOTS - Everything I expected of Campbell. RECOLLECTIONS - I object to penames like this. Doesn't give you a
