FANFARE 5 FISCAL YEAR--'39-'40 The detailed Expenses of an Average Fan by Jim Avery When the average scientifiction fan takes stock of himself at the end of the year, the figures that emerge are sometime quite surprising. One doesn't realize that twenty cents here for an Astounding, or three cents there mounts up to amazing proportions when added together. I believe that the following figures represent a pretty nearly accurate cross section of American Fandom. Of course for some (those who delve seriously into collecting, or who travel extensively for the purpose of meeting other fans) the following items are merely drops in the bucket. But for the average fan, I believe they hold true. But let the records speak: - For magazines (including of course, Argosy) I shell out exactly $14.60-- and I don't buy them all either! For fan magazines $2.50 departed from my wallet, although had it not been for a large number of exchanges, this figure would have been more than doubled. My publish-costs hit around $5.00 with no profit to speak of. Envelopes, paper, letterheads, and stickers sucked up another five bucks. And postage- According to the number of carbon copies I have in my files, I turned over to Uncle Sam something like twelve dollars for 3¢ stamps and penny postal cards, not to mention several dollars more on borrowed books and fan mags! On back issues, I had a fairly reasonable year, passing out only four dollars and a half. The "New Adam" was another $2.00 that shouldn't be omitted, nor two and a half for "Dawn of Flame" which I only got around to buying last January. To this, add a dollar and a half for building a bookcase to house my collection, plus four dollars well used in getting the MAINE SCIENTIFICTION ASSOCIATION under way. Oh, yes, mustn't forget that I own half interest in a mimeograph--$5.00. Finally, to this sum (whatever it comes to now) tack on about five more smackers for unclassified matter such as file boxes, typewriter ribbons, photographs, paper clips, etc., and you've got what the average fan spends on his favorite hobby each year. But to save everyone the trouble of adding this up, I'll spring the Grand Total--$66.00! Not as bad as you thought? Of course not. Only a dollar sixteen a week. Where else could one find so much sheer enjoyment for that paltry sum? Even a scientifiction fan couldn't tell you! I'D WALK A MILE FOR A SCIENCE FICTION WEEKLY!!! MORE PLEASURE PER PEEK!!
