12 FANFARE People often say that a genius who is ridiculed by people because his work is too fantastic, is born years ahead of his time. And there were great men like that, cropping up at different periods. Perhaps Roger Bacon was one of these men ? Who knows ? At any rate, after the Star had disappeared, Bacon thanked God with all his heart and soul that earth had been saved from destruction; he prayed also for the little band who had so bravely left earth four months ago. Thus did Roger Bacon sink into an exhausted slumber, tired out from his daily vigil at the telescope. But his slumber was not exactly peaceful. For his mind was working - not his concious mind but his sub-concious mind. He dreamt a dream that seemed like a nightmare, so fantastic it was. It was almost as if someone or something was trying to convey a message to him through the limitless space of darkness - - - - - - He dreamt of a mighty country, with science so far advanced it seemed it would never be possible for earth to catch up with it. He dreamed of a man who - astomishingly enough - was the exact double of Roger Bacon, though dressed in a queer custom. He dreamed of a time-machine this man had invented which would enable him to travel to a different era. The scene shifted to the scene of last week,- that bright star hanging in the sky, so bright, so overpowering in its intensity, with people looking up at it - the fear of the unknown in their eyes. Suddenly a kaleidoscope of colours, as if this man had put the time into reverse at full speed. This strange country again, the landing of the time machine in this man's house. Darkness for a while. Then a view of a strange box. Bacon stirred in his sleep. He remembered that box. How could he ever forget it, that bright light in his garden, him unearthing the box with Holmes helping him. He saw the box transported to a strange cold country, a land where it always seemed cold and foggy. He saw the box being buried in the ground - - - - - - darkness for awhile - - - - - Light again. Feverish activity in Atlantis. Spaceships taking off, heading for space landing on Mars and Venus. The scene shifts to Mars, the building of homes - curious design they were. Great roads and rivers linked these cities. Curious. From space they had the appearance of gigantic canals - - - - - Darkness again. Bacon stirred in his sleep, almost awoke. Another dream came to his mind. He saw this diamond spaceship, with light inside it, - happy faces everywhere. Music from the ship struggled to reach his ears. The scene shifted to a point in space where everything was black. Suddenly a beam of intense light blinded him. Curious thing, he seemed to see the beams of light from the sun hit the spaceship and rebound into space. Looking far, far into the distance, he saw where the beams converged. Queer, the way the light beams came together. They seemed to form a huge star, suddenly disappearing as, for the first time in weeks, the ship changed its course. - - - - - For a split second Bacon awoke, breathed a deep sigh of contentment, and then relaxed into a deep sleep, a sleep from which no man ever returns - - - - THE END
