gazed at his hostess with wonderment plain in his eyes, but she merely smiled at him frombehind her Mardi Gras mask. "Perhaps, Mr. Leland, you would like to investigate the source of those sounds? Well, come with me." Up an ancient stairway she led the way to a third floor garret. Packed into the tiny room were many people — black slaves, both men and women...Their limbs were weighted with heavy chains, and about the necks of many were cruel spiked collars. Some moaned for water. "Look well, Mr. Leland. 1 do not permit my slaves at the public whipping post. I deal with them in my own way. Watch!" Snatching up a whip, she commenced to beat several of the poor wretches, and Anthony Leland could only stand and listen with horror to their screams. Tiring of this, she turned and looked meaningfully at the huge black servant who had followed them to the garret, "Chain this man, Jason. And place about his neck a spiked collar. " Leland's struggles and shrieks availed him not a bit, and soon he had been bound with the moaning slaves. Then Jason, the negro. stiffened. "The house, Madame. It's on fire! We must flee! " And flee they did, leaving Anthony Leland to perish in the inferno sweeping through the old mansion. * * * * * "Open your eyes, Mr. Leland," urged Williams. David turned to the police officer who had brought his employer home, and asked "Where did you find him?" "In an old house on the cor- ner of Royal and Hospital streets. We found him in a room on the third floor. Except for those strange marks on his neck, he seems to be quite all right." David's face clouded, and the groping fingers of memory probed deeper into his brain. "My grandfather used to talk of that house," he mused. "A strange, cruel woman used to own it. 'Tis said that she kept a regular torture chamber on the third floor. It seems the house once caught fire, and the matter came to public attention. The woman who owned it was forced to leave the city." He stopped as though to gather breath. "But that was over a hundred years ago!" TELEVIEW FLASHES Scienti-Snaps, also an Empress publication, will hence forward by mimeographed (though it is planned to keep the hectographed illustrations). Material in the January issue will be by Nils H. Frome, Robert D. Swisher, Henry Haskel Hunter, W. E. Marconette, and others ............ Several of the "horror" magazines such as Eerie Mysteries, Mystery Tales, Spicy Mystery, etc. are beginning to feature more stories with a definite supernatural twist (and, on occasion, even scientifictional yarns). EDITORIAL CORNER If, by reason of some mis-chance , the mimeographing in this publication is not too good, please mark it down to inexperience. And, with the next issue, we hope to present a better system of makeup, W. E. M.
