of the gravity warp of the sun which cuts off one normal dimension and substitutes a fourth dimension; thus Vulcan then has only two dimensions in common with the rest of the solar system. At its greatest distance from the sun, Vulcan emerges from that fourth dimension for a shot time into the normal tri-dimensional existance. The sun's gravity warp also warps time, according to this theory. Joeseph J. Millard's THE EARTH SAVER (Nov. 42 Startling) contains a mention of the possibility of diverting things into some other spatial dimension to make them invisible. It sounds interesting, and I would like to see that idea developed in more stories. A.E. van Vogt's THE WEAPON MAKERS also mentions objects materialized on some invisible plane. In line with my suggestion of three dimensional time, ARENA (June 44 ASF) a Fredric Brown yarn, tells of a space-time frame where time is at right angles to time in our universe -- thus all the time and existance there happens instantaneously as far as sense of duration in our space-time continuum can tell. When Brett Sterling took of the CAPTAIN FUTURE novels with WORLD TO COME he presented us with a lot of dimensional pseudo-information. The Vegans discover a device that makes dimension-travel possible. It is not a perfect "warp" which would make the starting point and the destination adjacent so that no traveling is necessary, but it does bring great distances close enough that the dimension-jump is of triviling proportions. In its present stage of development, however, it is inaccurate in finding its destination. On entering the short-cut dimension, an object wavers and blurs before completely disappearing. The natural laws of this new dimension are unusual: space having a different curvature, light not travelling in what seems to be straight lines;projected images appearing and disappearing and things having a warped appearance. Then there's Gorma Hass, the culprit. He comes from a three dimensional universe with a curvature ten times that of ours. His universe, there would be be large and would have to be located where there was plenty of matter; such an amount as would have an effect on four dimensional space. (According to the theory necessary to the story, that is.) In the universe of great curvature, things are very definitely twisted and not just the things there, but things emerging out of the fourth dimension from other universes. Then there is the by-product that, the greater the curvature of the universe, the easier it is to use telepathy. DEAD CENTER by S.D. Gottesman (Feb. 41 Stirring Science Stgories) tells us that there is a lmit to the speed which one can travel in certain directions, for, if ne goes beyond that speed limit, he finds himself traveling in another direction which is impossible to enter at a lower speed. When traveling this new direction, surrounding matter changes oddly in appearance. At the transition point, space twists with gorgeous confusion of colors and upon changing over to the new direction, the universe seems to be a vast plain. Oh, yes, the changeover speed limit; you want to know how fast you can go in normal space before you are forced to enter the new direction! Ok, the figure is given as the fifth power of speed of light. Apparently Gottesman did get caught up on giving such a figure like George O. Smith and Wesley Long did in some of their stores in Astouding. But let us suppose that he was considering it as 186,000 miles per second, instead of measuring it in metric units. If my figure are correct, that gives us 222,620,278,176,000,000,000,000,000 miles per second (or roughly over 222 1/2 septillion miles per second.) That is 1,196,883,216,000,000,000,000 times the speed of light (slightly over 1 sextillion times the speed of light.) According to my figures, a light-year is approximately 5,869,713,600,000 miles. (almost six trillion miles). There this speed-lmit is 37,926,940,451,745 and a third (plus) light years per second (or, almost 38 trillion light years per second!)! Surely at this speed, it would be difficult to dodge the galaxies. --(page 6)--
