Scientifun A Dixie Press Publication A Sage of The Monster of the CAVE Unforgettable Courage! By Mary Helen Washington A fan flew over the sea a thousand miles. His plane motor was out of order. Down, down to the flaming earth. His life was a few minutes. He landed in a a town of Italy. And houses did crash. Fan was astonished what part of the country he landed on. He looked above the dirt and saw the flag of Italy. He rose from his feet and looked about. A rocketship was passing through the air. He started to wave his hand, but on the tail of the rocketship was a mark of death. He feared not to raise his hand. The German guns did blast. The sun was going down. Fan was alone. Suddenly a hand reached out for Fan. Fan felt the pressure of this queer hand. He felt hisself drug back into the darkness. A queer man appeared before him, with a big head, little eyes, and a medium body and tiny legs, and tiny arms. Fan was surprised that such a human being could live. The human being took his hands off of Fan, and seemed to question him. Then Fan said: "I didn't mean to land here," but the monster said, "You are in the hand of Italy." But Fan said: "Could I talk to the boss, to explain?" The monster said yes. There before Fan's eyes was a curtain. It rose, and there was a man just like the monster, only horrible, with two long tusks on the side. Fan drawed his throat in. Fun could not speak for a minute, for this terrible monster's hear was just a skeleton, and stars were all around it. Fan rose from his feet and began talking with what little air he had. He said, "Master, show me the way out of this monster land." The chief monster said, "Tell me everything you know." Fan started telling his tongue.off. Poor Fan told everything he knew. and then some lies to get free. The monster knew that fan was lying. He grabbed poor Fan by the tie and showed him some burning flame. And spoke like THIS: "FAN, DO YOU WANT TO BURH WITH THOSE FLAMES/' Fan-sweat poured off of him like rain. Fan said, "I will tell you the truth, I swear." The worried man sat him down in front of the fire and said: "Fan, the first lie you tell me, and backwards you go, and I know when you're telling a lie." Fan shivered but got enough courage to speak. "Fan, did you fly over here and land on purpose?" "Did you mean to spoil our country?" "Do you want to kill yourself over here?" "Why did you come over here?" Poor Fan did have nothing to say but "Please let me go," in a sad voice. The monster said: "The sun had about risen. I can't stand day. I will let you go against my will, but day is coming." A hand took Fan back to his plane. When Fan was alone, he breathed like a million pounds was off of him. Fan wanted to remember this as a dream, but it lingered in his mind as long as he lived. Fan got into his plane and saw that the motor was repaired. He took off just at daylight, and the cave was sunk down to the dirt, for the monster couldn't stand day. Fan's plane rose into the air, and he flew across the sea, and when he got back his parents was astonished to hear his story. Fan dreamed about that two nights. Fan was 18. He remembered that all his life. From that day on, the monster took people and questioned them every time they landed on Nazi ground. Sometimes Fan flew over this land, but he never got near enough to see anything, so that was the end of Fan's store. ---THE END.-- (The author of this saga is only 9 years old.) (PS: Thrilling, wan't it?)
