[Scientirun?] A Dixie Press Publication page 10 "MUSINGS FROM MUSCATINE," continued form page 9 The whole nation is an uproar because of Iowa's victory recently over the supposedly hot Illinois team. Such things do happen, much to certain people's indignation. Fannes must excuse my branching off from the subject of science fiction like this. Occasionally one feels like shouting. Either that, or starting an aquarium for hapless fish. It has often been said that stf is, or is not, escape literature. It might, or might not, be "escape", but as for it being literature... I am slightly dubious as to whether that is true or not. ((Harris, I fear that you degenerating once more - RW)) What puzzles me is, how do fans manage to read all their favorite publications each month? How do they possibly find the time? As it is, your columnist is almost being cramped for time to keep up on Thorne Smith's novels, Robert Benchley's parodies, not to mention other delectable items. Ah, the modern science fiction fanne is a veritable wonder-worker with Time and its inticacies. I might mention that I am somewhat of a stf fanne myself, although I seldom mention the fact, as someone might pass out from obvious surprise. Ah! This spring weather. It comes early to Iowa. It makes one feel like placing his lunch money on a horse at... What's the name of that park in Chicago? Anyhow, this weather is certainly the thing! Gorgeous. In addition to it being wonderful weather in the Spring in Iowa, the nation's most gorgeous, exotic girls take walks in this beautiful Iowa sunshine. Ah, sweet mystery of life! Wine, women and horses. The perfect combination. Why in Heaven's name must science fiction be confined to pulp literature? Why does it have to be pried loose from under a bunch of dime novels at the shoddier section of each news stand? Street & Smith has gotten out of this shameful rut, by issuing magnificent magazines like ASTOUNDING and UNKOWN WORLDS. Now, the point is, why don't other stf mags take up this challenge? Haven't they the funds? Is Palmer starving? Certainly not. Palmer has the idea that stf is the same as a "comic stf", thus AMAZING appears in the same shape each month. ((That sentence isn't quite clear. Didn't you know that AMAZING now has 276 pages - with both AMAZING and FANTASTIC on the increase? - RW)) In my candid opinion, fannes should withdraw support - all support - from AMAZING. It no longer deserves readers. ((A far far cry from the days when the Voice of the Midwest wrote, " AMAZING leads the field! Palmer is printing stuff better than the classics." - RW)) Ah, ces't drole, ca. Ressort cache poussiere de moyeu avant. Which means the same as the Dutch "Sluitveerje der smeeropening." Which, in English, would be rather preposterous, so we needn't embarres anyone, or ourself, by repeating the general meaning. Au Revior. The End A SHORT HISTORY OF EGBERT FANN, concluded from page 3 Egbert wanted to help crush the Nipponistic Warma Chine, but was rejected by the draft board... and so we leave them, Egbert and Pluto, slowly becoming educated in the ways of fandom. As as we leave them we hear Pluto murmur to Egbert: "Zzzwheehonkzurpaaassszzz." And here's where we sign off for a while. The next issue will be better than this one; that's a promise. Scientifun will continue to improve. And don't forget to SEND-OFF! for all the rest of the "Dixie Press" Publications.
