SLEEPING SICKNESS IS SLOW TO SPREAD Serious New Disease Sweeping Country May Be Controlled by Proper Measures No cases of “sleeping sickness” have been reported among the students, although a few serious cases are present in the city, according to Dr. Henry Albert, professor of pathology and bacteriology. “Sleeping sickness” or epidemic coma is a relatively new disease to physicians, states Dr. Henry Albert. Fortunately the disease spreads slowly. Although a considerable number of cases have developed in the state Dr. Albert believes it can be controlled by proper precautionary measures. The disease came here from England, where it was present last year as an epidemic. In Austria it was first known to exist in 1917. Many physicians, Dr. Albert asserts, believe an intimate connection exists between it and influenza since it immediately succeeded the influenza epidemic in both England and this country. There is nothing to substantiate this theory. “Sleeping sickness” is undoubtedly due to a germ, thinks Dr. Albert, because it spread like other infectious diseases mainly through the respiratory tract. The seriousness of the disease should lead to great precautions. These in the main may be observed by covering every cough and sneeze and by washing the hands in soap and water before every meal. Dr. Albert criticizes the popular term “sleeping sickness’ as being a misleading one and suggests instead of the scientific name which is too long for common use, lethargic encephalitis, that epidemic coma be substituted. This latter term is being used to some extent. “Sleeping sickness’ is too apt to be confused with the well known “sleeping fever” which attacks the natives of Africa with such virulence. There is no connection between the two diseases. The same precautions which are employed to guard against influenza will safeguard the individual from epidemic coma. Early symptoms of the new disease are a tendency to see double and a feeling of great drowsiness. Baconian club met Friday evening in the physics lecture room for the first meeting after spring vacation. Prof. W. D. Harkins of the University of Illinois spoke on “The Structure of the Atom and the Evolution of the Elements.” A quartet composed of Vivienne Coady, Mona Goodwin, Lucille Arnold, and Dorothy Kelly, has been selected to sing the principal parts in the Girls’ Glee club concert. The date of this event will be announced later. [advertisement] New Shipment of Rookwood Pottery New Pictures New Frames Book and Craft Shop 124 E.
