Saturday, May 10, 1919 The Daily Iowan State University of Iowa Page Three REED AND OLSON TO COACH Mason City and Cherokee Want Iowa Athletic Stars as Coaches Ronald Reed, football captain 1918, and Merrill Olson, center on the basketball team and catcher on the baseball team, have been offered coaching positions at Mason City and Cherokee. Reed has already signed the contract. These two athletes will graduate from the liberal arts college in June, and several high schools have been endeavoring to obtain their services. Mason City has always been a championship contender, and with the All Western end at the helm, they should more than hold their own with other schools. Olson made the All State as center, and in baseball it is doubtful if a first basemen in the Big Ten can outfield him. Each freshman, in addition to his regular English composition course will be required to take two hours of oral English, one hour on a laboratory basis, and one hour of recitation. The first half of the year will cover forms of expression, articulation and emphasis. Stress will be placed upon ability to read aloud intelligently. A thorough test in pronunciation must be passed by each student before credit will be given for this part of the work. The second half of the year will be given over to develop ability to think on one's feet and to synonym study. Arrangements have been made whereby the course will be divided into twenty four sections limited to twenty-five students each. Sections will be given classifications, superior students forming one group, those with voice defects another, and those of moderate ability composing the other two groups. Every freshman will appear before the instructors of the public speaking department at the beginning of the year to be classified. Two new instructors will be secured for the course. Other institutions having similar courses are Ohio State university, Syracuse university, College of the City of New York, and the University of Chicago.
