Thursday, May 22, 1919 THE DAILY IOWAN, STATE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA PAGE THREE JOURNALISM OFFERED AT SUMMER SESSION Daily Iowan Will Issue Three Editions a Week During Summer School Courses in journalism will be offered at the University summer session for the first time this year. The Daily Iowan will also be continued during the summer on a three issue a week basis, and journalism students will continue to do their laboratory work on that paper. A course in News Writing will be modelled after the usual regular work in reporting and correspondence, except that in addition to a review of the college, country, and metropolitan field, suggest for teaching journalism in the high school and the management of high school publications will be discussed. The News Writing course is five hours. An editing course of three hours will include the usual desk editing and night work on the paper. Typical newspapers will be studied and the mechanical operations in publishing giants observed. The Daily Iowan has never before been published during the summer session. Two years ago a weekly publication, The Summer News, was started by W. E. Hall, and this paper was continued last summer with Mildred Whitcomb as editor and Rowena Wellman as business manager. Romola Latchem, present business manager of The Iowan will continue their duties during the summer, and the editorial management of the paper will be directed through the work in journalism. Mildred E. Whitcomb of the publicity staff of the University will have charge of the courses in journalism offered in the summer session. The work will be given only in the first term of six weeks. GATTY SELLARS WILL APPEAR IN RECITAL Gatty Sellars, English organist-composer, will be presented by the music council of the University in an organ recital at the Methodist church Thursday, May 29. Mr. Sellars has just returned to the United States from South America, where for a period of more than six months, he has been giving recitals in the principal cities, under the direction of the British Patriotic society, for the Red Cross funds. Pupils of Miss Agnes G. Flannagan will give a piano recital in Prof. W. E. Hays' studio this evening at 7:45. The public is invited. Hours during which the exhibition will be open to the public will be announced later. Alice Hinkley, Kappa Kappa Gamma, will spend the week end in Chicago. Marie Kellogg of Currier hall is spending the week end at her home in Cedar Rapids. Vincent McNurlen has been entertaining his father of Sioux City for the past week. BOYTON SUCCEEDS TOUSLEY Douglas F. Boyton has been elected secretary of the Y. M. C. A. cabinet to succeed Horace W. Tousley who has become full time acting general secretary. Arthur F. Rosenbaugh is the new publicity chairman. Lenore Boesch, Gamma Phi Beta, is attending her brother's wedding in Racine, Wis. Phi Kappa Psi will entertain at a dinner at the Hotel Jefferson and a dance at the Burkley Friday evening. President and Mrs. W. A. Jessup and Mr. and Mrs. Ingalls Swisher will be the chaperons. Mary McCord, Kappa Kappa Gamma, will visit at her home in Des Moines this week end. TEACHERS WANTED For all departments of school work. School officials will soon elect teachers for next year.
