Saving...
July 10, 1939 Dear Fred: (Fred G. Clarke-Seattle, Wash.) Thanks for your prompt and adequate letter on the General Company. I found that the firm thru which I really wanted to write the insurance could give me a policy in the General at the full saving, tho with a smaller fee to themselves. So I took the saving. About the same time that I wrote to you, we mailed back to George the book on British Columbia fish and animals. Our George didn't absorb a great deal of it, but I found it very interesting. It was most kind of George to send it to us, and I wish that you would hand him this letter so that he may know that it was appreciated. George K. would take keen delight in hooking some of the finnies described, but he for some reason hasn't developed the liking for books and reading that abides with the rest of us. I hope that it shows up sooner or later in order that he may not only learn something more than occurs before his own eyes and ears, but find therein an answer to the too frequent query, "What shall I do?" The summer is proving to be a pleasant one for all of us, as it is the first time that all of the boys have been at home during the vacation for about three years. Monilaw wanted Nile back at Highlands but he preferred to stick at the home ranch, and the rest of us are liking it too. During June it was lots of sleep, much reading and considerable golf. About July 1st he began his labors with the grain inspection service for the Grain Exchange; taking samples in the wheat cars as they arrive. His crew works in the CBQ yards, beginning at 6 AM and ending at from one to three in the PM, depending on the amount of business. It is pretty hot in the yards but he doesn't seem to mind any part of it except the early starting gun. This work will last until 1st or 2nd week in August, probably. About the middle of August Nile is going up to Okiboji for a brief stay to aid the Iowa coaches in staging a demonstration in coaching. Soon after that he likely will begin working out with the football as it appears that he intends to take his football seriously this fall. I am hoping that before the boys go back we can all take a short jaunt somewhere, perhaps to the Black Hills. I can't remember when the full cast has taken part in the same vacation. Ben came home on the afternoon of the 4th, on schedule, and reporteda fine trip east and a highly educational excursion, including a flying trip to New York and the Fair. His nature is to make the most of such an opportunity and he brought back a good bunch of pictures and copious notes. The people he was with were especially interested in the historical aspects of the country and as they had been there several times before, they could give Ben a liberal education in American history. Ben now is employed by the outfit which installed the air-conditioning equipment in the Farm Credit Building and will help them for the next two or three weeks in adjusting and balancing the system. He is glad to get
