Saving...
Omaha, Nebraska, November 3, 1939 To Monison Hotel Chicago Dear SB: Very glad to have your letter of Wednesday. Even tho a short one it was looked for with considerable eagerness, and of course we can well understand that your time these days must be carefully alloted to your many demands. Also glad to have your report that the class work is coming along satisfactorily. Keeping first things first will never leave you in the wrong spot. In another month it should be possible to give full attention to any loose ends there. Further about the Notre Dame tilt; George and I will need ducats, and I believe that you have Bob's if he should come. There is considerable uncertainty there as far as coining in our car is concerned, as I plan to start Friday morning and do a job for the Bank at Clarinda and Bedford before running to Adel for Friday night. Probably Bob cannot make that schedule but perhaps can arrange other transportation coming over. I shall phone him this evening to aid in crystallizing that point. Then Ben will need a ticket, and unless you know that different plans have been made for him, you perhaps should send one for him also. If you send it to me I will forward it to him. It is much better to have the tickets in hand before coming, as it avoids difficulties because of traffic in Iowa City and of late arrival. Probably we shall drive down on Saturday morning to arrive about noon, assuming that there will be no opportunity to visit with you before the game. As mentioned in another letter, we would like to stay over Saturday night after the ND game, if you can locate cots for us, and would be glad to see the Dolphin show. If you have other plans for that evening the car will be available. This Purdue game looks tough and I note that the disinterested boys are picking Purdue. That is alright, as I would rather play a good team that Is confident, than a good team that is worried about its security. Iowa played a splendid game against Purdue last year, and should play even a better one this year. Alert, fighting football will win, and you have demonstrated that Iowa can do just that for sixty minutes. Your letter and Bert McGrane's report of Friday indicate that Iowa is victory minded. That can easily mean the margin of winning against the strongest kind ofcompetition. You boys have been playing Notre Dame football in more ways than one this fall; using the style of playing, and I also mean the heads-up kind of ball that takes advantage of the other fellows errors. That constant alertness is worth touchdowns, and you know that they still settle on touchdowns. I hope that you will have a running attack against Purdue that will prove an effective alternate for your passing attack. It takes a variety to keep those other chaps guessing abit. Just like you did at Madison with your short passes, then a long one. If Couppee is responsible for the good generalship this fall it certainly augers well for the next two years. Two more years under Anderson ought to mate Al a really potent pilot. With time out for the wedding bells, we shall be listening to you pour it on Purdue. I'd like to have you play a football game that would please you from every standpoint. I know that your standard is pretty high, but it may as well be this Saturday as any other. Bless you my boy. Love Pop
