Saving...
G. W. CLARKE ADEL, IOWA Adel, Iowa, November 16, 1939 Dear SB. As previously indicated. I am in Iowa again and a day earlier than usual, because I want to make a trip to Franklin County on Friday, combining a little business with pleasure. Therefore, I write you from Grandma's instead of from my subterranean studio. Probably you are thinking that thisseason will soon be over, and I warrant that its terminat ion will not come too soon for you. But it has been rather a grand year onnthe whole and a fitting climax for you. If the next two games result in the way that they very well can, it will be a record of some sort to be sure. And I hope that no one believes that the next two can't be won. The game Saturday with the Swedes will be a battle royal, as it would seem that Iowa no longer has the advantage of being the under dog. And when a man or a team once gets above the common level he and they are at once the target for all who seek his or their place. I would say that you ought not to worry about the score or how the game will end. But plan your attack just as far ahead as your discernment will permit, play the game with the same vigor and stamina as has been so often demonstrated this fall, and if that doesn't bring home the flag there will at least be no regrets. It would be natural to expect a let-down after the series of hard games ending with the Notre Dame victory, but you know that there is no foundation in fact for such a theory. I believe that Iowa can and will play two more games of the same caliber as thelast three. You and all of the Iowa boys are right on the threshold of real greatness and I know that you have the punch and the capacity to step right thru that door. On the next two Saturdays I expect to see all of you play the same faultle ss ball that you did last week. Again, all power to you. Love Pop
