ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII Honolulu Hawaii December 1, 1939 Dear Nile: Congratulations on your fine playing this past football season and on being the outstanding player of the nation. I have proudly boasted you to my friends down here and have told them of our slight acquaintance. I am proud of the thought that I caught some of your bullet-like passes during spring practice. I have followed your playing and Iowa's schedule and thrilled at the fine showing you fellows made. Will you convey my congratulations to your captain Irwin Prasse, Mike Enich, Ham Snyder, Otto and the rest of the members of the team. Most of them won't know who I am. Here I am getting so friendly when perhaps you too don't know who I am. Well, I am the little Hawaiian who had the pleasure of tossing the football around with you previous to spring foot-ball practice. Your season is all but over. Ours here at the University of Hawaii is just in mid-season. This month is the biggest one as far as foot-ball is concerned. Tomorrow, December 2, we play the Fresno State College team for the Shriners Benefit. Then on December 16, we play the College of The Pacific for the Police Benefit. The last game of the season, the Pineapple Bowl game will be against Oregon State on January 1. I am working here at our university as a physical education instructor. My duties call for assisting in foot-ball, especially with the backfield, junior basket-ball coach and head track coach. In addition to these I have six regular physical education classes of swimming and touch foot-ball. The foot-ball season here has thus far been a successful one. We had a team in the league called Polar Bears, made up of mainland college players with some local talent added. Some of the outstanding players on this team were Mike Kabealo from Ohio State, Jud Atchison from Texas University, Dave DeVarona of California, Ted Gebhart of Oregon, Walt Smith of Saint Marys and many others. Next year a team similar to this will be brought down. I am anxious to see some come down from Iowa. If there are any boys anxious to come down, have them let me know and I can work hard for their selection. I know the guy who managed this year's team, and who incidently will be the same manager next year.
