[Feb. 5, 1939] Sunday Feb. 1939 Dear Family: The second semester is now one week under weigh. I am carrying seventeen hours this term made up of the following classes: Corporation Finance, Modern European History, Intermediate Accounting, Sociology, United States History, and Monday and Banking. After visiting my history classes twice I am all the more convinced that it is in this field that a great deal of my interest lies. My grade point last semester was 2.78 resulting from 11 hours of B and 3 hours of C. I have reached the point where I am capable of knowing what I want to get out of my respective studies and college as a whole consequently I shall abide the courage of my convictions in this respect and not be governed too much by popular convention. I don't anticipate that my grades shall drop too much and yet at the same time I am going to concentrate my study and thought in the direction which I think shall benefit me most whether it be reading the newspaper or just lying on the davenport and musing. This spring is going to be an extremely yet profitable time for me I am sure. Yesterday I talked with Anderson for awhile and m still more favorably impressed then the first time. He is a forceful character and seems to know his stuff. There is no reason in the world why we shouldn't get along quite alright. He drew me off in a corner after we had talked a little while and said that he was counting on me to call signals for the left-half back post; that by next fall he expected me to know more about calling signals and the different formations than any of the opposing coaches; that if all he has heard about me are true I should be the best back in the country next year. All of w ich sounds quite rosy but shan't put me off my base or guard the least bit. However, I can't deny that I was happy to hear him say this for the s mple reason that I have practiced all my life to learn to run throw and kick and haven't as yet in college had the opportunity to show myself off a good single wing back. I have been playing quite a little bit of handball and if I do say my game is in pretty good shape. I weight about 172 now whick is a little lighter than in the fall but I believe it is the more efficient weigh t for me. After playing Ernie Nevers some handball yesterday I stopped offf at his aprtment for awhile and had a very nice visit with him and his wife. He is a swell gent and a lot of fun. We talked over some of the formations that he is going to use in pro football next fall and discusses the personnel that he is going to have available. He mentioned that after I finished next fall I might want to drop in and play a little pro ball for him to pick up some cahs to put me throught law school. All of which is a thought and not much more at this stage of the game. I don't know for sure when spring practice is going to start but it will be too soon whenever it is. If it weren't for that I should looke forward to this spring as being probably the most enjoyable I have had in three years of college. I have a nice large room and two fine roommates--Dick Hoak, a sr. and the new president, and Billy Stuart, a soph. from Chariton and a pledge. My desk is large and well lighted and there is plenty of room for my books. Also I believe I sleep better out on the dorm where it is cooler than I do in the same room where I study as I have done in the past two years. This steward job is going to give me
