6/13/39 My dear Grandma: I am so glad that there was a time interval following your decision to give me grandpa's watch. When you told me you were going to give it to me on our return to Adel I felt at once quite happy and proud. On second thought I became rather reluctant to accept it, feeling that I wasn't the one who should really have it. I would have mentioned it immediately had I not felt that you might think me unappreciative. Personally, I feel that it should go to Fred; I know how very highly he would prize it - as of course any of us would. Mention of Fred brings me to the second purpose of this letter. Mother seems to think you took offense at my remark concerning the usual tenor of Fred's letters. I earnestly
