Sunday night March 21, 1943 Dear Folks, This afternoon I listened to an address by my good friend Winston Churchill, prime minister of England. I thought he sounded a little tired from his recent illness, but the old fire and spirit were still there. For the first time he yielded to pressure for an expression of post war plans. Speaking in general terms his proposed outline sounded of hope and security yet was tempered with a caution born of hard experience. He made no promises but vowed energetic preparation. Surprisingly enough no mention was made of a second front or of the summer U. boat campaign. Again, as always, he reminded his people of England's responsibility in the world community of nations, spoke out proudly of their battle for the cause of freedom. Never will he let them forget their glorious and honorable history. Quoting Disraeli he stated "a nation is governed by tyranny or by tradition." In peroration his stirring tones urged that we get back to the job of licking Hitler. How I do enjoy listening to him speak. Enclosed is a page of verse I dashed off yesterday at squadron - we were grounded because of low ceiling. Also I am sending
