my unexpected recruiting broadcast in 1939. A short taxi ride and then a subway train got us down town by seven where we took a room at the Commodore Hotel. This hostelry is right next door to Grand Central and the sub terminal. It also gives rates to service men and through the N.Y. Officer's Service Committee sells play tickets at half price. Four of us went to see "My Sister Eileen" which has been running for three years. We were all disappointed in the performance, however. I fear the current cast is to blame, for the original show was highly recommended and the movie version was excellent. Before leaving for the theatre we had a fine meal at the Commodore, accompanied by the melodious music of Vaughn Monroe. Is he pretty good, George? Tues. morning at ten we started for Quonset, traveling the airways to Hartford, Conn, then east to Providence. I almost forgot to tell you a most interesting piece of news. Between the second and third act of the play I walked out to the lobby and whom do you think I ran into - Tom Pansing and Jack Bittner! I could hardly
