Tuesday Feb. 16, 1943 Dear Folks, I have just finished an immensely interesting and informative article in this week's Sat Eve Post by Forrest Davis. It throws a great deal of light on "The January Promise" made to Russia by Roosevelt and Churchill, and in so doing reveals an important and characteristic difference in temperaments. Underneath the picture of these two great leaders is a line which speaks of Churchill as a hardheaded pessimist." How untrue that seems to me; how unkind. His promises and prophecies are curbed by a caution born of long experience, and he makes no attempt to gloss over the practical realities of a situation - but a pessimist, never! According to this article Roosevelt really was the main author of the African invasion. He, also, evidently has used the prestige of his position to moderate differences between Russia and Britain. There is no denying he is doing a pretty fine job on the international scene. Read the last three paragraphs of this writing and see if your heart doesn't go out to good old Winnie once again: I find myself in pretty much agreement with
