The U.S. has had its Washington, Hamilton, Jefferson, Lincoln, Roosevelts; and England brought forth Pitt the Elder in the latter half of the 18th century, Pitt the Younger in the Napoleonic period, and now Winston Spencer Churchill, perhaps the greatest of them all. The guiding and motivating principle of all these men has been a devotion to the cause of human freedom, a love for the homeland. May their breed increase! I have spoken of the allotment I have made and what I wished you to do with it. Now I want to append another wish. Each month I'd like to have you purchase for me, and so indite on the fly-leaf, a good book. For my future home I want a good library as much as anything. You are well aware of my tastes and interests in fiction and biography. Let them guide your choice.
