Saturday Feb. 27, 1943 Dear Bob, Although I have always qualified my designation of future liberty days, I didn't really think there would be any further alteration of the schedule. However, I was wrong, and the confidence of my last letter was ill-advised. The Admirals, or at least some gent with a lot of gold braid, has decreed that one half of our whole complement of officers must be aboard at all times. This has resulted in a readjustment of liberty days which makes it impossible for me to show in New York this coming Sat. night. In fact, if things stand as now proposed there isn't enough time allowed for a fellow to go any farther than Providence - or Boston at best. It seems there is a tightening down all the way round. The skipper announced today that a court martial awaits the pilot next caught "flathatting." That means an end to flying under the Jamestown bridge, zooming houses and fishing boats, making runs on transports. And I might add, even though such flying is fun, the skipper's decision is probably a wise one. Bob, I'm thoroughly sorry this barrier to our plans has arisen, especially, if you have already contacted Jeanne. However, there isn't a doggone thing I can do. Nonetheless, I am prompted to make comment concerning Illian's eager, nay, urgent suggestion. The sportive solicitude he expresses
