October 11, 1942 Dear SB: Glad to hear that you received the box of winter gear before you left for Jacksonville. It was a snug package, and included coat hangers and 2 pant hangers. The card asking for the hangers was misinterpreted by mother when she first read it. If the wire hangars are not what you want I can provide some wooden ones, but they appeared too bulky to put in that box. Your car is stored in Uncle Charlie's garage, or barn. We checked on that space before leaving Adel, and because of uncertainty of space near at hand in Omaha, decided to leave it in Adel. Mitch cleaned and polished the body, greased the chassis, drained the radiator and heater, waxed the body and metal work, took out battery, removed the wheels and stored them in Chas' basement, and blocked up the car. When I am back there next, I shall cover it with heavy paper to protect it from roosting birds, etc. Since receiving your card of Oct. 5th, I have asked Mitch to remove the bumpers and rubber mats for contribution to Adel's scrap drive. I deposited the pay check, and your savings account now stands at $753.34. From it I have subtracted two payments of $22.oo each to apply on your uniform account, and when I took in the book they added $7.50 in interest. I decided to deposit your $22 cash withdrawal each month in my account and send a check for the payment, as providing a handy form of receipt for the payment. Your checking account at Iowa City showed a balance of $227.62 on October 1st, and I noted that you made a deposit of $140.00 on Sept. 22d. The government insurance certificate has been placed in the safety box. Ben has made no mention of your honorarium in letters to us, and I mentioned it in my letter to-day. Perhaps he has written direct to you by this time. Mother sent you his address I believe, but I repeat it here: Avcad BGK, Class B9, USNRAB, Los Alamitos. Also, I have written to-day asking that your Reader's Digest be sent direct to you for as long as you are at Jacksonville. Mother couldn't see much sense in your buying issues. When your address becomes more uncertain we can have it come here again. Ben's has been changed to his present address, The bracelet that you sent mother met with a welcome that left no doubt that it will be worn on each and every occasion. I feel very guilty for not having done more of that sort of giving. I haven't any record at all, and I believe it pays big dividends and I am glad that you have developed that little habit. The wings also were received with pride and pleasure Your letter of September 28th was very pleasing to us. Altho there never has been a shadow of a doubt regarding appreciation in you boys for the affection and comradeship dispensed at the home hearth, it always is gratifying to hear modulated testimony on the score. Thanks, and the same to you. Truely we all have much to be thankful for. The grafic and detailed recital of your visit in Iowa City and Chicago was highly interesting. You must have had a happy visit. We did receive the clipping
